Indesign and XML running slow

I am running Indesign 14.0.1 and am importing an XML document then using the 'Map Tags to Styles' facility. As long as the Preview pane is ticked before I start, mapping any of the tags to any of my style preferences works well on the first style, then when I try mapping any other style tags to my style preferences, indesign starts to go really slow. The XML file is quite large, but I'm only pulling over from the Structure panel a very small part of text to my document, to try the mapping styles on.

If I don't have the Preview pane ticked whilst trying the mapping styles and do a few changes then click OK – Indesign quits.

I've checked the Mac's memory and that seems OK.

Any ideas please?
