Indesign automatically set new text box to left align even though paragraph style is center align

New Here ,

As the subject, my Indesign automatically set any new text box I create to left align even though I'm sure I set the paragraph style is center align - This happens with all the file I open (for license, I just use a brand new IDNN file when recording the video) - Everything in paragraph style in the new text box is correct, except the align.

I tried to check the paragraph tab, object style, deselect all before creating new text box etc. but everything doesn't work. As in the video, when I use edit -> deselect all the paragraph tab turn back to center align as the basic paragraph setting, but when creating new text box it auto turn back to left align.

This happens after I uninstalled a normal Western and reinstall an Arabic feature version of IDNN, I wonder if it is the default text box style of Arabic version? Is there any way to fix to center align when creating new text box? The Western version of IDNN I used before worked smoothly for paragraph style.

Most likely, because you're working with just a [Basic Paragraph Style] and [Basic TextFrame] ObjectStyle - try creating a dedicated ones.

Because it is brand new IDNN file, I didn't create any paragraph style and Object style, but I set those basic styles to center align already (You can see the setting in video). And in other files which I can't record because of license, I have mutiple paragraph styles with center align, all doesn't work.

I don't have this problem on your file:

BUT - Windows 10, InDesign 20.0 EN - not MENA...

Even with NO ParaStyle selected:

I'll get this:

And, of course, InDesign will switch to [Basic TextFrame] ObjStyle:

Even when in the [Basic Text Frame] ObjStyle - you don't have ParaStyle defined:

So the formatting goes from the selected ParaStyle - in this case [Basic Paragraph].

If I'll make another ParaStyle active - like "Chapter Title" - it picks up its formatting:

With nothing selected, what style is active?

Also, did you edit the Basic Paragraph style or just use the Paragraph or Control panel?

@Dave Creamer of IDEAS

For the INDD I used to record the file, basic paragraph style is selected.

For the INDDs I'm having, the style I clicked before using deselected all function.

All is set to center align - even the basic paragraph style and object style - you can check it in the video I recorded.

Okay, here's another video to the real file I'm working on for closer look: (Not only this file, the issue happens to all INDDs I open)

Hi @Nguyen27656669q2zj,

Adding to the efforts by the experts, I tried reproducing the issue in the MENA version of InDesign, but I wasn’t able to replicate it. In my tests, the text inside the text boxes aligns correctly based on the paragraph style settings, meaning it stays centered as expected.

Could you try resetting your InDesign preferences to see if that helps? Ref: Reset InDesign Preferences. Just make sure to create a backup of your preferences before resetting, as mentioned in the article.

Let me know how it goes.
