InDesign canvas goes white...

Hi everyone! I'm having issues with my indesign. Everytime I want to draw an object, move an object create a new one... the canvas goes all white and I can't really see anything.

I'm working on MacBook Air, Sonoma 14.7,   InDesign 2025 (20.0.1). I did read that there were similar issues but I thought they have been fixed?

TIA!

Hi @Diana Ch,

Thanks for following up!

As of now, the product team suspects that the issue might be related to the latest macOS update. To help us investigate further, could you please share the following macOS details:

1. macOS version (e.g., macOS Sequoia 14.0).

2. Any recent updates or changes made to your operating system.

This information will help the team pinpoint the root cause more effectively. In the meantime, I’ll continue to keep you posted on any updates or fixes.

I have the exact same problem, running Sonoma 14.7.1

By @raf_8719

As I have reported on other threads, it's a new bug in InDesign 20.0.1.

Turning GPU on in Preferences fixes the issue, provided you have the GPU option available at all.

If you don't have GPU available, you can roll back to 20.0 in the Creative Cloud app:

As further tests revealed, reverting to 20.0 doesn't necessarily make this bug go away, even though it appears to be only introduced in 20.0.1.

Have you considered going up to 15 Sequoia?

Hi @leo.r

Thanks for that.

Effectively, when I installed the 2025 version, the GPU option wasn’t available. Now it is, and simply activating it made everything work perfectly!

Thanks again!

Updated to Sequoia V15.1.1 about two weeks ago and everything functioned normally.  As I opened an existing or new InDesign file and clicked in the text box the white flash started!  Click and hold and nothing but a white screen for the duration of the hold!!!  My question is how did this JUST NOW start happening???  If it was the OS update I should have had the problem since day one.  Have been working daily without issue until now! Am running a Mac Studio with M1 Max Chip and LC27T55 Display 1920x1080.

Any advise how to remedy would be much appreciated as I truly cannot work this way!

I've had the same experience when building InDesign documents with lots of graphics and separate text frames, like catalogs and directories. It seems to be a function of having "enough" separate pieces to process that result in the processing lag when editing any of those multiple, discrete text frames. I would get the white/blank flash, then a processing delay, then finally be able to edit/format text in the selected text frame. I was never able to discover an arbitrary point where that effect happened, only to recognize the issue after it occurred.

In this case, my solution was to further sub-divide offending InDesign document files into smaller chunks and then stringing them together through InDesign's Book functions. That would eliminate the effect in the two/three subdivisions of that previous larger document. Not a fix per se, but a workaround that would get me the result (less aggravation working with the document file) that I wanted.

Thank you for this Randy!  But in my case it's happening even with a new document that has no items at all.

Functioning as "normal" the past few weeks, even last night without issue then this started today!

This is bad!

After doing some quick research around here, perhaps something in these two threads may help you:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-flashing-screen-when-moving-objects/td-...

Or this one.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-screen-bug/td-p/14119986

This may not be an Adobe issue, per se, but rests with the programs' interaction with MacOS Sequoia. Hopefully fixes addressed in the first link and actions addressed in the second my help you.

Good luck,

Randy

I am working in Mac InDesign 2025 (Sequoia 15.1.1). When I move an object, the pasteboard goes white. This just started today. Why?

Does the matter improve if you disable an app called Magnet?

Does the matter improve if you turn off GPU Acceleration?

In Preferences > Interface > Match Pasteboard to Theme Color. Try changing it off or on.

I have this same issue. White screen as soon as any item is moved. It's very irritating and makes using InDesign very difficult.

Issue persists regardless of Overprint Preview being activated or not, rulers turned on or not. Some online advice suggests toggling the GPU Performance option in prefs: "GPU Performance" is greyed out in prefs on this Mac because of hardware.

Definitely a new bug in this update.

P.S. Turning GPU on MacBook Pro M1 actually did solve the issue for me, which doesn't help you as you don't even have this option available. I'm just posting it as general info for those with the same issue who may view this thread.

Have you tried to revert to InDesign 20.0? See my post above, this should fix the issue in InDesign 2025.

I did try that, and I still had the problem. It only went away after going back to InDesign 2024. Adobe also just let me know that it is a reported issue, and they recommend going back to 2024.

Yes, I can confirm this now, too. While the problem only started after updating to 20.0.1, it didn't go away after rolling back to 20.0. Maybe the 20.0.1 update changes something that affects all 2025 versions? I have no idea.

Like I mentioned, in my case the problem is solved by enabling GPU performance, but this isn't available to all users.

I reverted to 20.0 and the problem persists. I see your note about going back to InDesign 2024 and I want to do the same. When I go to Creative Cloud (in order to revert to 2024 per your advice) I only see version numbers…19.1, 20.0.1, etc. I see all those version numbers but I don't know which version number is 'InDesign 2024'. Any advice?
