Indesign CC 2019 - document size problem when creating new document

I have an issue with creating a new document. I first put on my custom size but if my margins are bigger than the document would allow, it changes to document size back to what it was before. But without any notification.

So for example: I choose "Create new...", and there's some preset there for example 210x297 A4, with preset marginals 12,7 mm. I then click on height to change it to let's say to 20 mm (which is smaller than the margins). But as soon I click anything else (Bleed, Margin, etc) it changes the height back to 297 mm. No error or anything. If I don't click anything, just click Create it makes me a document with A4 dimensions.

If you don't notice that the dimensions switch back, you create a document that's not the size you meant it to be. At first I had no idea what caused this but after trying several times, I noticed that dimensions go back to preset if margins are bigger than the new size would allow.

So in order to be able to make custom size I need to first change the margin to smaller than what my document size allows and after that change the size. Please tell me this is a bug and not a feature?

I actually found it here:  Indesign ->  Preferences -> General ->  Use legacy "New document" dialog

It works very well. Thank you.

The answer to your question is that no, Adobe doesn't warn you of the conflict of making your document smaller than your margins allow in the New New Document dialog box. In the Legacy dialog box, when you click OK, it will warn you of the conflict with an error message (see screen shot below). I agree that it would be helpful and suggest that you submit a request at indesign.uservoice.com.

I'm trying to figure out what your issue is. You set up a new document and select A4, do you then want to change the default margins? If instead you want a different page size, then overtype in the new Page Size with your desired dimensions and it will be named Custom.  You can then decide on your margins, bleed etc.

You can save this as a new Document preset.

If you feel there is a bug and you can't create a new document to your sizes, give us the TPS, and the margins you require, and we can test it.

The issue is basically when trying to create document with smaller width/height than the margin.

I open InDesign

I choose "Create New..".

It opens the document setup panel where you set up width, height, margin, bleed and so on.

There are some height and width measurements there already. Usually from a previous document you have saved or one of these InDesign blanc document presets (one's under tabs "PRINT", "WEB", "MOBILE"). So in my example that was 210 x 297 mm (A4).

I then procede to change those measurements to create a new document with different dimension.

Indesign default margin is 12,7 mm.

IF I change my document height or width smaller than those margins, it switches the height or width (whichever is the one that's too small regards to margins) right back to what it was when I first opened the Create new document window.

No error message, just changes the dimensions.

Nothing to do with saving presets. I'm sorry if I could not explain it clear enough.

This has never happened to me before. And in our office we have this same thing on all our iMacs with Indesign CC 2019. I just re-installed version 13.1 and it happens in that as well. So not just an issue with the latest update.

In older versions when you tried to create a document smaller than margins it gives this error message. This screencapture is from CS6 so very old but it's the only older version I could find.

As requested, can you supply the dimensions of the document you are trying to create: Trimmed Page Size, and Top, Bottom, Inside and Outside margins.
