InDesign CC 2021 Freezes 30 seconds after startup fixes

Hi,
I'm having some issues using InDesign since updating and I was hoping someone could help me resolve and get working.
So I am on an M1 Mac with Big Sur 11.6. I have tried all versions from 16.3 up to 16.4 the latest version, which is where I first encountered the problem. All versions seem to produce the similar results, after the software opens it either crashes with a spinning lollypop or tries to open the last file I had open as if the software had crashed. It then moves to the spinning lollypop. When I check force quit it shows InDesign is unresponsive.
Has anyone else had issues like this? Suggestions are welcome please.
Cheers
David

Hi Anshul,

Good news! InDesign is finally running thanks to your list of things to try. I got all the way down to Safe Mode, which you do differently with M1 Mac btw.

I also renamed the caches and Prefs as suggested. Restarted and just like that it works just fine latest version.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Cheers

David

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your experience. I would like to know if the steps suggested above by @Eugene Tyson worked for you? If not, I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of InDesign
  • Is the issue happening while opening a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are the files and links saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System/ External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, plugins, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Please check if turning off the internet help resolve the issue?
  • Are you using TimeMachine? If yes, please check if turning it off/ disabling it help resolve the issue?

Also, you may try running the app in Safe Mode  (Mac) & Root account (Mac). Let us know how it goes.

We will be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

Hi Anshul,

Unfortunatly, the suggestion Eugune did not stop the software from crashing.

Right of the top I did run an update from apple for the system about 1 week before I realised InDesign did not want to play.

Mac M1 2020

macOS 11.6 (20G165)

InDesign 16.0 currently have tried 16.4, 16.32

I noticed the issue on the 12th October.

I do have a problem report generated by the system.

One more thing to note is that the software freezes even on the startup screen without a file open.

I do have some old fonts in my system and thought it was something to do with that but not any more.

Thanks for taking the time to look into it.

Cheers

In your InDesign preferences - go to the GPU performance and turn it off.

Does that help?

Hi, thanks for the suggestion.

When I saw your post I thought to myself, how can I do that when the software freezes so quickly after I open it. However I did manage to get to the prefs before it got stuck.

Unfortunatly it still froze after I OKed the change in prefs, so thanks for the suggestion.

UPDATE: I think it has something to do with the software trying to "rescue" the file I opened before it froze. Now everytime I try to ope the software it attempts to rescue it from the crash.

I do get the option sometimes to choose but not often.

Cheers for your help BTW.

David

Try removing the auto-document recovery files before you start.

  • Users/[User Name]/Library/Cache/Adobe InDesign/Version[#.0]/InDesign Recovery

To get to your user library, hold down the Option key while going to the "Go" menu at the finder.
