InDesign CC crashing on launch on macOS

I've just downloaded the CC version of InDesign to my MacBook Pro but every time I launch it it crashes.

I'm running OSX 10.8.3, 8GB of ram, 8GB of disc space and I've tried trashing the prefs but it doesn't even make it to that dialog window. The UI appears and that's it boom! I've sent the crash log to Adobe but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or things to try to get it up and running?

I had the exact same problem today. It was a font in my case. Just open fontbook and disable all of the user fonts. Restart Indesign... if it opens without crashing... bingo you've found the problem. Re-enable the fonts until you find the culprit.

Try this:

Go to     /Users/your user account/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/

Select folder named Version 10.0.

Press command-i  .

Check permissions and be sure your name's account has permissions to read and write. If your username is not listed, add it with the symbol + and assign read and write permissions.

I hope this works...

This works for me!

I'm running Mac 10.10 on a Macbook Air.

Adobe: y'all really need to fix this.

http://www.pinterest.com/pin/create/extension/I was finally able to get this to work, based on Adjal's comment, as immediately above.

In my case, the files that needed updated permissions were at:

Users/USERNAME/Library

Instructions:

  1. I clicked on the folder Adobe InDesign, then RIGHT-CLICKED the folder and selected GET INFO.
  2. Then I unlocked the folder by clicking the little lock in the bottom right of the GET INFO pop-up box (and typed in admin password).
  3. Then I set the permissions for all different types of users to Read & Write.
  4. Then I relocked the folder, clicking the little lock in the bottom right of the GET INFO pop-up box again, and I was done.

It works perfectly now, sooooo....  Woo-hoo!  But seriously Adobe, this was a kluge and something that shouldn't be happening.

In the end it wasn’t hard!

One simply has to go to user/library (Mac), and open preferences. Then drag 1 file to the desktop: the folder Adobe InDesign

That was it!!

I tried every method on this thread for OS X but Adjal's fix was the only one that worked for me. Thanks!

It's simple:

In Mac:

1. Go to Preferences Folder

(HD > Users > Your User > Library > Preferences)

2. Right Click on 'Adobe Indesign' folder

3. Edit Sharing & Permissions to your user (include Read and Write or include your user as necessary)

Indesign runs perfectly!

If only it was that simple. My user was already set to read write, so I changed all users to read write just in case, with "apply to enclosed items" also, but no change, still crashes after launch.

Just thought I'd share the resolution that worked for me - not sure if it will be of any use on Mac OS, since I'm running Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit.

I ran into this same issue today, after installing new CC applications last night.

After uninstalling my CS6 applications first (leaving preferences etc.), I rebooted and downloaded the lastest CC installer and left it overnight to re-install my various applications.

When I fired up InDesign today, it crashed immediately on launch - I went straight to Google and ended up here.

Before trying any of the convoluted fixes, hacks or workarounds posted here and elsewhere, and before attemtping to use the CC Cleaner Tool, I browsed to the following folders:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Adobe

In both of these folders, was an "InDesign" folder, each containing two more folders - "Version 8.0" and "Version 9.0" - I simply deleted the "InDesign" folder from both AppData\Roaming\Adobe and AppData\Local\Adobe.

I then re-launched the InDesign CC application and was back in business, no crash, all good.

No corrupted fonts to weed out, no dodgy plugins to remove, all things considered, it was a painless fix. I presume this is related to redundant or old CS6 settings/preference files, so if my fix above doesn't apply to a Mac installation, perhaps try removing your old settings/profiles.

Hopefully this will save someone else the time and hassle before heading down a more elaborate resolution path.

YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are awesome. Had t odig a little different way to find the same folder, but that did it!!! Wahoo thank you!!!

I have windows 8.1 pro 64 bit as well and none of those other fixes would work. I searched my PC for the Roaming folder, got into the Adboe folder, found the InDesign sub folder, and saw Version 9 and 10. I backed out and deleted the main Indesign folder and it relaunched:

CRASH FREE OPEN ON THE FIRST GO!!!!!

ADOBE - fix your programming!! I have spent hours trying to fix and your cookie cutter "log out" response is sheisse!

[SOLVED] 4 me at least. I had many problems with illustrator cc (Mac version) at startup, it simply crashed. I tried many solutions from the internet -  repair Diskpermission, deleting prefs files and plenty other stuff - no luck!.

Sume suggested to switch to guest user and see if problem persisted, IT DIDENT!

Illy CC opened without a flick....(other users had reproduced this error also).

FINNALY i found the solution, cause i wanted to KEEP my normal user account.

The following is completely safe to do, tho' backup is always a good thing 2 do.

I have repeatedly run "Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs" and let it run for up to a day and it never completes the task.

I ran it from startup (Command + Option + R) - Utilities - Terminal - typed "resetpassword" - chose my user account - selected "Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs."

I was confused by some other threads as to whether or not there was a safe way to resolve this.

I'm running OS X Mouintain Lion 10.8.4.

Before trying this I repeatedly ran all of the repair permissions options and other utilities in disk utilities.

I experienced the same it was working in guest user and not in my actual account, but kudos to you, reseting the permission using terminal solved the problem.

This isn't astrophysics. Turn all of the user fonts off and then turn them back on group by group until the crashing stops. This is really pretty basic stuff for anyone who would be using this software. Im amazed at the lack of diagnostic skills many of the people have here. This is a highend program that occaisonally has some glitches. For some of you maybe textedit is a better solution.

Exactly, it's not that hard, once I found out it was a font issue it took me about 5 minutes to take care of it. Turn off your fonts and turn them on group by group (I went by all the A fonts, B fonts, etc..) until it crashes and narrow down what font is causing the issue and then leave that font turned off.

Please note that font tools like Font Doctor, Apple Font Book Validateur, Extensis Suitcase 4 does not see any problem with my font. With the turn out turrn in option i see that 5 fonts cause problems with Indesign CC and 3 of these font are Apple Font (with the best know Apple Chancery !). Maybe my font are corrupted but for Font tool there are any problem and I can use these font without trouble in Indesign CS6. Note aslo that Adobe has not yet sent information to 3th part developper to update their tools and plugin. And it is not the first time that a new release has bug. Yes of course, Indesign without font runs perfectly, but that is a complete non-sense, i use normal font and Indesign must work with ALL the normal font. I hope to see Extensis release soon an upgrade of Suitcase 4 and see Indesign CC working then with ALL font !

Sorted mine here took about ten minutes but narrowed it down to a cheapy font called Hybrid. Works fine now no crashes as yet.

Well... I use Fontbook to unable one by one users fonts. Indesign runs until i reach the last 7 fonts: Apple Chancery, AppleGothic, AppleMyungjo, Bitstream Cyberbit, Bitstrean CyberCJK an ITC Eras !

After the crash and after disable these fonts, the crashs occurs again ! - I need to reboot the computer to see InDesign CC running (without these 7 fonts).

I have also validate font in FontBook - no error !

I can not accept that Indesign CC can not support some Apple Font !

Hi

Same issue for me. I'm going back to CS6 until there is a patch. I don't have time to manually check InDesign's compatibility with fonts. I will keep my eye out for a patch.

This is really an easy deal. 5 minutes start-to-finish on the diagnosis and repair. Open Fontbook -> Select User Fonts -> Diasable User Fonts -> Re-Start InDesign CC. If it runs then tackle on letter group at a time. I went through about a 300 fonts on a Gen1 Intel Mac Pro in less than 5 minutes.

PC guy here, but I hope this helps anyone who's still having issues with ID CC crashing. I read on another forum that the two little dots above the "e" in the name of the Ithornet font was causing the crash. While I didn't have that particular font on my machince, I thought maybe I had other fonts with special symbols/characters in their names. After carefully looking at all the fonts installed, I had a found one with the "2" superscript, another with the > symbol and one or two with a "." in their name. I rebooted after the deletions and now ID CC works fine.

I confirm what i say above : the crash is caused by 2 bytes fonts. All the 'Roman' font are accepted. I use also extensis Suitcase but until now there are no Suitcase plugin for Adobe CC. All the font tools like Font doctor are not optimized for 2 bytes fonts. I get no crash with Indesign CS6 but in my Indesign CS6 the fonts are monitored by Extensis Suitcase. About the name of the 'illegal font' a lot of my 2 bytes fonts as Korean Chinese and Japanese name... and same the Apple 2 bytes fonts with English name cause Indesign crash (i put only the Apple Symbol, AppleGothic and AppleMyungjo  in the users/lib/fonts folder and the crash occurs...) The culprit is related to fonts or how Indesign CC works with fonts...
