Question

InDesign CC won't save my files

Hi

I've been working in InDesign for a week now and since yesterday I started noticing that at times InDesign won't undo and I am not able to save my file. I keep hitting command + s while working but it just doesn't save or give an error message. If I go on the File menu all the save and save as commands are grayed out. If you close the file and click on the save button InDesign just gives a message that the file cannot be saved. I have to close the file without saving and redo all the work. Because InDesign doesn't give an error when pressing command + s I would do a lot of work under the impression everything gets saved but it doesn't and I keep losing a lot of work.

Also CC runs very slow. There are times when the program just "freezes" for awhile while InDesign does somethings in the background and only after it is done you can start working again. The pages panel takes ages to load the previews onto the pages and while it is doing so I cannot do anything at all.

Starting to think I should have stayed with CS6.

We have had this problem (inDesign not able to save or undo) when using InDesign along with Extensis Universal Type Server (or Suitcase) - Basically the root of the problem is with Microsoft Fonts in the Library (the ones installed automatically when you install MS Office).

The solution we found was to remove these fonts from the local drive and create a font set on the Universal Type Server to manage the MS fonts.

Here's how:

1. Go to: Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts/Microsoft

2. copy the entire folder to: Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts Disabled (just in case you need them later)

3. also copy the entire folder to wherever you keep your managed fonts (i.e. not system or local fonts) - we use a network location, but you may have a local folder if you're not running a network type server (i.e. suitcase).

4. Then delete the original "Microsoft" folder from: Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts

You'll need your admin password to authenticate this. Don't worry, you have a backup in Fonts Disabled!

5. Create a new set in Extensis UTC/Suitcase and drag the Microsift Fonts in from your font library (Not the Fonts Disabled folder - i mean wherever you keep your managed fonts)

6. Permanently Enable all fonts within the set.

7. Restart your machine.

This instantly fixed the issue for us!

So, I have noticed that the issue appears to be with CS6 original files. I have not had issue with brand new InDesign CC files. It shows up after I export a PDF in those old files. (they have been converted. I also run extensis, and turning off auto activation seems to be helping.

I have gone the Idml route it does not work. Also save as.

Also interesting to note, I can save and and sometimes undo up until the point where I export out a PDF. Then no saving ability or undo. It really bothers me there seems to be not much effort put in to resolving this issue. It is a critical issue when I can't save or undo. Any help or insight with this Adobe?

I have had this problem on and off for about 6 months. As many have said, it's frustrating and time-consuming, and causes lost wages. I called Adobe tech support about it two months ago. The person in India with whom I spoke said, "You cannot use Extensis products with Adobe CC. We do not recommend this. Turn off Suitcase fusion and don't use it."

I wonder if Extensis is aware that Adobe's suggestion is to phase out their product? I just lost three more hours of work this morning, and wish the problem would be resolved. InDesign was a miraculously good product until this issue cropped up. I've rarely had any problems with it. But I haven't had any problems with Fusion either.

Any news on Adobe resolving this issue? The IDML fix isn't going to work in the long term.

Running OS 10.9.2, Adobe CC yearly subscription, Suitcase Fusion 5.

Hi,

To anyone who's using Suitcase Fusion 5 and is affected by this issue, we just released version 16.2.1 which addresses the it. You'll find links to the Mac and Windows installers here:

We are using Universal Type client. Version Version 4.0.2 (63). All on Macs running OSX 10.8.5. I have yet to see a solid answer or solution to this issue. The thing is it totally kills workflow and sometimes makes us redo work.

After putting up with this issue for several months I finally decided to do a wipe and clean on my MacPro. It was getting to be time for that anyway. I am happy to report that after a clean install of the mavericks OS and Creative Cloud....I have no issues at all with InDesign.

I think that Creative Cloud does not do well with upgrades from CS6 etc.

Good luck to everyone dealing with this issue....I'm over and out!

I am having this trouble too.

Mac Mini:

Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory  16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB

Software  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)

Wacom Create tablet

Driver: 5.3.0-3

Bamboo Dock version 4.1.0

I was running a slightly downrev version of InDesign, but upgraded to 9.2 and am having the same issues.

I have turned off sync settings with no effect.

I have rebuilt my settings with no effect.

I have now turned off touch on my tablet, and added a trackpad for mouse functions.

One interesting thing I've noticed is that it seems to occur when I accidentally rotate an object from a corner handle with the touch function. I'm not sure exactly how to do it on purpose to see if it's a repro case-- I have only done this by accident when mousing quickly past a handle.

This is making me nuts. Seriously. I've lost hours and hours of work today, and I'm about to miss a big deadline. I'm saving to idml every 15 minutes now (set a periodic reminder alarm) but this isn't a solution.

I'm guessing my next step is to clean every whiff of Adobe off this system and reinstall. But I don't have time to do that right now, and as this is my main workstation with all my archives the prospect is not very appealing. I don't want to screw up my Lightroom library or lose all my Photoshop and Illustrator tweaks trying to deal with an InDesign problem.

Please help.

Jennigma,

The rotate wierdness was related to Wacom incompatability for most of my Indd issues. What worked best for me was to go into the Wacom settings (in system preferences) and completely disable all the touch functions on the tablet. Make sure to turn off everything except the stylus and see if that works. Good luck.

I have done, but it's taking some work to get used to mousing with one hand and using a stylus for the other.

I cringe at the thought of a full reinstall on this system. It was re-built less than a year ago. It took almost a week to get all the aps back in touch with their files, and I was still finding issues months later.

Exactly the same happened to me this morning... ended up losing a couple of hours work... very annoying.

I thought it was od that I couldn't undo using the Command Z shortcut... then when I tried to save, it said the file couldn't be saved.

I have just updated Java yesterday.

Seems like a long-running bug and is very annoying.

I now have my Indesign CC working. I completely un-installed all of my CC apps. Un-installed all previous Creative Suites, Downloaded Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and ran it, Used Disk Utility to repair permissions, restarted my Mac and installed all my CC apps again. So on top of the 3 weeks I had been unable to use Indesign CC I also lost another 3-4 hours of not being able to use any other apps while performing this workaround. Not happy with Adobe at all for their lack of input with this. But I am now happy because I can finally crack on with my work and catch up with customers design work!

Oooookay.

So new fascinating bug.

«Undo» sometimes stops working. I can still save, save as. I can even do «undo» when I work on, but sometimes it just stops working.

This is a weird one. At first I thought it was because I re-saved a file, but it seems to be quite random. . .

Any ideas?

You mean change all the fonts in your documents to something else? Not sure I follow your "fix".

Participant

yes. use font -> search and replace all the current font with another standard one (like if you are currently using helvetica on that document change all to Arial or Times or whatever you want)

Where is Adobe on this one? Are we nearing a solution?

I stopped dragging-and-dropping files from Bridge and I never have the no save/undo issue. At least 90% of the time, one simple drag-and-drop will stop me from saving and undoing (very easy to replicate). I just have to remember to hit CMD+D and only drop files into the open dialogue box or browse for them; however, it's quite annoying having to take the long way to get things done in InDesign when it all used to work once upon a time!

I have been experiencing this same problem since upgrading to CC from CS6 a few months ago. I work on a 2009 MacPro with a dual quad-core and 14GB of RAM, running 10.9.

I experience:

1) inability to undo

2) inability to save

3) inability to edit frame contents from links panel

I have tried turning off file synching and that seems to have worked very well for a while. However, I tried using a modified keyboard shortcuts file the other day and the problem arose once more despite the "fix" that had been working nicely.

This will happen on legacy files as well as new files created in CC.

Exporting the stuck file to IDML has worked well but this happens so often when working on a file that it is not a working option.

Just to add myself to the list:

Same problem here on my MacBookAir, didn't try to replicate it on the MacPro in the office so far, where I mostly still use CS6. Wacom drivers for Intuos/Bamboo installed (but no active tablet attached at the time).

Undo/Save-Failure after dragging images from Finder and/or Bridge.

Restoring preferences, switching of SYNC and so on didn't work. Contacted the very friendly support and wait for some hopefully good news.

Glad you had at least a good support experience...

I was on LiveChat for 1hr20 mins, at the end of it the support said I need to deactivate my Wacom Driver, and that Adobe was not responsible for such issues.

I was shocked at the miserable support.  I have a transcript of the chat!

I have just started having the exact same issue. Although I haven't been able to find a permenent solution I have found what causes it and a way to save even after this happens.

- Draging images in from finder and/or bridge will result in a grey out of all command key related commands. This includes Undo, Redo, Save, Save as etc.

- If you find yourself with the issue you won't be able to save ALTHOUGH you can still export. By the look of it you can retain all information by saving your document as a IDML (In Design Markup). Once you export, open the document and then save as a standard .INDD file if you want.

I don't have a tablet installed on the machine that I run Indesign on so I can't guarentee that tablets won't cause this issue.

Has there been a proper solution to this problem as yet. Its casuing no end of grief, cannot save and cannot undo, farely fundamental issue for a new programme, having to move back onto old platform

Ever since I turned off my sync settings preference to none it has worked

for me. Not a complete fix but it worked.

Did that, not perfect still no undo function. I am being told by support that its to do with non adobe fonts, for a design agency and designers you could not in all reality use only adobe fonts, simply unworkable. This to me is a massive fundamental flaw with the programme not a minor one. We have turned it off and are back to working on tried and tested after losing 3 days of work to it.
