Indesign Colour

Question

Hi there

I'm having trouble with colour in Indesign, particularly when I try to change the colour of text.

I will select a vibrant blue and it will automatically set it to a dull blue.

I have played with the Transperancy Blend Space options with no luck.

Can anyone give me some guidance

InDesign doesn’t have a document color space (you can mix objects with different color spaces on a page) so it’s Color Picker mode is dependent on where you have your cursor in the dialog.

In your capture your cursor is in one of the C, M, Y, or K fields, so the Add Swatch button reads Add CMYK Swatch—if you click OK, or Add CMYK Swatch, the color will be the nearest in gamut CMYK color. Put your cursor in one of the R, G, or B fields (not the radio button, which controls the Space View) and the button will change to Add RGB Swatch, and the color you pick will be RGB 82,11,255:

You are trying to select colours that are out of gamut of the print space you are working in. Bright blues like the one you are trying to select are possible in the RGB world (like on a computer screen), but are not printable using printers using CMYK inks. The duller blue below the square of the one you selected shows you the closest possible match based on your colour management settings. Although it is possible to create a document just for the web world and use only RGB colours, if you intend to print these out, the differences in gamut is important to understand. In any case your InDesign document likely has "Proof Colors" selected under the View menu, which will show you what your colors will look like under a CMYK world based on the output profile selected under "View > Proof Setup". This is not an error.
