My daily use of Indesign (19.5.5) all of a sudden is broken and I can't any more move objects. It usually occurs after a while, allowing me to work normally for about 30 min, then randomly moving or trimmering an object with the arrows causes the freeze of the program. I've already made the usal attempts to recover by working on a copy, rebuild from skratch the document and change the value in preference (units and rulers) (in mm) but the problem persists. Anyone facing the same issue? Thanks

what's your operating system version? does it happen in all documents or only specific ones?
also, try general troubleshooting steps:

Hi @Gioyer07,
Thanks for sharing the details. Do you see the Adobe crash reporter dialog when the freeze happens? If yes, please submit the report and share your email address with me via DM on the community, so I can review the logs. Ref: https://adobe.ly/46nAnR9
It would also help to check if the issue occurs when running InDesign in Safe Mode to rule out any interference from third-party apps or services. Ref: https://adobe.ly/3I3FBZX. If the problem continues, a short screen recording would be very useful, so I can get it checked with the team.
Looking forward to your update.

Thanks. Will do my best to document everything. Things I've done later include: updating graphic card's drivers, setting the minimum distance in preference/units and rulers to "0.3mm" value (previously 0.25mm). Let's see how it behaves today (but condition is different because today I work at the same machine remotely on "smartworking").

Today it didn't crash working. Will test other conditions tomorrow and report here.

Today it crashed twice (freezing). I send the description by Adobe's crash reporter dialog box and copied the reports as a txt file (available hereunder). Unfortunately I can't use Safe Mode as this is a Company's PC and would need the IT dpt. permission. I keep working on ID 19.5.5 version because some plugins (Easy Catalog) would not work on the latest ID without changing their core. Update is scheduled in a year and there are some opened catalogs that need to be printed.https://www.swisstransfer.com/d/d9447eb3-7762-4a2c-9686-8e062e60f9fa The only thing I noted is that the issue is related with moving, rotating or resizing objects (pictures - we only use CYMK Tiff files below 10mb). This workflow never had such problems and no fresh installations of other software was made before issue appears. Thank you for the attention.

Hi @Gioyer07,
Thanks so much for sharing the crash reports and the extra details. I reviewed the files and noticed the freeze is being logged as an access violation error. To investigate further, it would be very helpful if you could also submit a report via the Adobe crash reporter, as those logs include more detailed information for the team. Once you've submitted the report, please share the email address you used there(via DM), since I couldn't find any linked to your current community email. Ref: https://adobe.ly/45LfGiP
I completely understand the limitation with running Safe Mode on a company PC. If possible, please continue noting the exact conditions when the crash occurs and, when you can, share a short screen recording, so we can better reproduce it. If your IT department allows, resetting InDesign preferences as Bill suggested could also be worth trying to rule out preference corruption.
Looking forward to hearing how it goes in your next round of testing.

In order to better define the issue, I've done the following and monitor for a week different conditions:
- renamed the Preference folder to "Version 19.0 old" in the ..Roaming/Adobe/InDesign/
- copied only the strictly necessary files from the old directory (InDesign Shortcut Sets - ignoring my old custom Scripts and old Workspaces)
- configured from scratch the Preferences from the dropdown menù 😞
- saved my new workspace (via Window dropdown, not via File/User Settings)
Will update in a week if issues persist
When I used the Adobe's Crash Report popup window, I described everything and mentioned you and this forum's topic. Curiously there's not an ID that may help precisely link the forum and your (immense, I suppose) Tech Dept.
Thank You

Hi @Gioyer07,
Thank you for the update and for carefully documenting the steps you've taken. I tried searching your submitted logs by my name as well, but they still don't appear on my end. In the meantime, I'd love to know how things are going after the changes you made. Is the issue still happening? If yes, are there any possibilities for you to update InDesign to the latest 20.5 version, even if just for testing, so we can check if the problem is tied to 19.5.5?
Looking forward to your update.

If this problem is a result of program corruption then it would be a good idea to trash your InDesign preferences. This will restore the proram to its defaults which will hopefully restore full performance.
To reset preferences on Windows:
You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.
To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.
The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.
