InDesign Crashes and freezes when typing in text box or copy and pasting on macOS

This morning I saved a design file (let's call it A) as a new version (B) to use as a template. But as soon as I tried to edit the text, (as in, clicked the text box) it froze, gave me spinning wheel of death and I had to force quit. I re-opened and tried again. Same problem several times.

So I tried a different file (C) (which contains all the same fonts etc) and this time, while I was actually able to click the text box, as soon as I cmd+C it shut InDesign down immediately.

I shut my mac down and started again. Same problems with the same files.

So I tried it on my laptop. This time, when I opened the original file (A), it wouldn't let me save it (just shut InDesign down immediatley). I tried opening a different file (D) and it let me copy. But as soon as I pasted it into my new file (B), and tried to edit the text, it crashed again.

I tried a third machine (my colleague's) - this time it let me click the text box, but again, wouldn't let me copy the box. I tried several more files (with the same template), and had one or more of the previous issues on all of them.

My problem is the fact I need to use the assets from old files to make sure my new design is the same layout as previous designs. But I've had to reboot InDesign countless times, and have done no work in about 3 hours. HELP.

All of this has started happening with files I've been using for months with no issues. Same fonts, colours, layout etc. Why am I suddenly having issues now?

Hi Robynn,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing with InDesign. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

1. The exact version of InDesign and macOS.
2. I appreciate that you have already tried with multiple machines and files so definitely it's not a file specific issue, however I do need to know where are the files saved, locally or on any network or shared drive? 
3. As suggested by George, could you please try resetting the preferences, for that please follow the steps below:

• Close all Adobe applications 
• Go to Locations:  
• ~/Library/Caches 
• ~/Library/Preferences 
• Rename Adobe InDesign and com.adobe.indesign to Adobe InDesign.old and com.adobe.indesign.old 
• Launch InDesign from the CC
