InDesign Crashes on duplicating text or object frames

I recently updated to the latest InDesign 2025 version via the creative cloud. Now every couple of hours when I am using it and I hold option and drag a text or object frame to duplicate it the program now crashes. It doesnt happen every time and when I reopen the program the drag to duplicate function works fine but then after a couple more files or an hour or two go by and it will happen again. These are all different files with different elements with no common link between them and it was not occuring before this latest patch.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for sharing the details. I tested this issue on macOS Sequoia and Windows 11 but was unable to reproduce it. Based on reports from users in this thread, updating to the latest Sequoia version has helped resolve the issue. I recommend giving that a try.
Thank you to the experts for their insights and suggestions! Adding to it, were any of you able to submit a crash report via the Adobe Crash Reporter dialog box? If not, please submit the report, ensuring you include your
...Hey everyone,
Thanks for your patience. I checked with the product team, and they confirmed that a bug was already logged for this issue, and the fix is included in the latest InDesign PR build.
If you’re still experiencing crashes when using Option + Drag, I’d highly recommend testing the PR build to see if it resolves the issue. You can access it by following the steps in this blog: How to Join the Creative Cloud Prerelease Program
Give it a shot and let me know if it helps! Looking forward
...Hi everyone,
The InDesign 20.2 update is now fully rolled out and available for download. If you’re still experiencing crashes when using Option + Drag, I would highly recommend updating to 20.2 and testing again. Let me know if the issue persists!
Also, we’ve seen some reports of InDesign 20.2 crashing when closing documents, and the product team has isolated the issue to a conflict with the Typeface app. If you're using Typeface, please check out this thread: 20.2 Update - InDesign Crashes a

What platform, OS and FULL InDesign versions, hardware configuration - especially, how much RAM do you have?
Please check my reply in some other thread:

Other reason for crashing- corrupted font.
Overall - you can read more about how to diagnose problem with crashing InDesign here:

I think Ventura 13.7.3 was just released - not sure if you're able to update to this version or not.

I actually downgraded back to this from the latest OS as I was having all sorts of issues with performance, mainly due to Google drive and file syncing and file hotlinking and other various bugs with Ventura. I just saw a comment that mentioned someone else reported the same issue so it might be tied to the actual hotkey. I'm just glad I'm not going crazy.

@mike.kinkopf Are you saying you downgraded from OS 15.3 to OS 13.x?

It was a clean install but yes I rolled back. The OS isn't the issue with this bug though, you can find multiple people across multiple versions with the same issue. Today I did roll back my InDesign one version and the issue has gone away as it was only present in the latest version of InDesign.

Thanks @leo.r I'm seeing various reports too - hard to keep track.
Much appreciated.

This is happening to every time I drag and duplicate anything (which I do a lot) so I have had to revert to a previous version.

Just to add exactly the same is happening to me (although more often) since the latest update. Clearly a bug in the update rather than something we are doing. I have been working on the same file for two months and never had an issue with it until the update. Have reported it, hopefully it is resolved soon.

If anyone is still having issue I suggest doing what Robert at ID-Tasker kindly, and sensibly, suggested. I have gone back to InDesign 20.0.1 (previous version), as has most of my studio having the same issues.
A FYI the issue was wisth Sonoma OS, so I will try updating to Sequoia to see if that makes any difference.

Ugh I have the same problem since this year

I just wanted to point out this bug is easily repeatable and happens daily for me multiple times per day as I use this method all the time to duplicate objects and frames.

Oddly, I'm not having any problem option-dragging objects. I'm on a M1 MacBook Air with OS 15.3 and InDesign 20.1.
It could be a problem install, an OS issue, or a processor issue.

Another person with the same problem here, since updating InDesign to the latest version yesterday. Every five minutes or so it just decides it can't cope with this simple operation any more. Why do these programmes that have been around for years feel like you're constantly using an untested beta version or something? Really wasting time here constantly having to restart Indesign when I've got work to get done!

@TomHolmes_G&I What is your OS version? Are you running any third-party system-wide utilities?

Ventura 13.7.3, stock version of InDesign. The font in the text boxes is Proxima Nova installed from Adobe Fonts.

Just adding to my experience, I've rolled back to InDesign 20.0.1 and it's working fine. Just a note that not everyone can update to the latest OS – my iMac is a 2017 model and I'm not about to throw it in a skip and buy a new one over a simple function like this.

As I mentioned in another post, if you are running an older OS, stay on an older version of InDesign.

I get the logic, but as a user I think it's easier to stomach that your computer is out of date if the thing that doesn't work is some fancy new feature, whereas this is a basic function that worked fine before and shouldn't be difficult for an older computer to perform.

So when InDesign is updated, and potentially multiple parts of the code base are updated, you only want the NEW features not to work. I don't think that is how programming works...
