InDesign crashes while working in split layout view

Explorer ,
Sep 21, 2022 Sep 21, 2022

I keep on running into this issue.
I've had this on both mac and Windows machines, and with two different employers, going back to 2018.

Whenever I'm working in split layout view, InDesign keeps on crashing after a few copy-pastes or other actions (undeterminable what really causes the crash) from one layout view to the other.
Reported it as a bug, but all I get is crickets.
The problem keeps on persisting, while I have to reboot InDesign probably 8-10x per day.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Have you tried resetting the InDesign preferences?

Hi Derek,

Thanks for your response. RAM and hard disk capacity are plenty (16Gb RAM, excl. scratch disks, 1Tb+ hd capacity).
As I mentioned, this is an issue which goes back over 3 years, on 5 different computers and two operating systems, including newly installed software. This isn't a preferences issue. For your info, yes, on the first two computers quite in the beginning when I first started having this issue, I reset the preferences, obviously without any result.

Maybe you're getting conflicts between old copies of InDesign. Consider using the Adobe Ceaner Tool to remove old InDesign versions and undertaking a clean installation.

As I (also) mentioned before, this has happened also on clean installs. Actually, the machine I'm working on now is a clean install. It's happened 4 times this morning in a time span of around 40 minutes

Do you a third-party app installed such as a Font Manager?

Not sure if "any" third party app would be of influance, but no, I don't have Font Manager installed. At this point the only third party app which is directly implemented in Adobe (to my knowledge) is a barcode software app. But that was installed recently, and the issue was already present before that was installed.

There are other apps, like VPN, security apps, etc., but those were different between the two employers I worked for, so I don't think that would be the issue either.
Also, the problem occurs both when working locally and on a (remote) server, so I doubt it has anything to do with that either.

Just to check, are you using Window > Arrange > New Window For xxx.indd to create your split view?

Edit to add:
So it's not two separate files in a split layout view, but the same document in split layout view.

I just opened two separate documemnts with split view and I was able place images in both documents without any issues.  It's strange (and maddening) you have the problem.

I can't put my finger on when it happens. Sometimes I can work for 2 hours and nothing happens, and the next time it crashes Indd 3 times in 10 minutes. Super frustrating.

Maybe consider getting a new (refurbished possibly) Mac in the meantime to keep your sanity!

I've had this problem on 3 different macs and 2 different windows machines.
After 4 years of having this issue I doubt a new (refurbished) mac will solve the problem.

An extraordinary story - five computers with the same issue. I wonder what particular configuration you have that's causing this!

Exactly! And with two different employers (i.e. different server configurations, different safety settings, etc.). This is why I was wondering if (and how) I could be the only one experiencing this.

Hi @ArnoEnzo,

Sorry about the crashing! I know that's frustrating. Could you please share a few more details like:

  • The exact version of InDesign.
  • A small video of your workflow
  • Please submit the crash report by following the steps suggested here (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/kb/submit-crash-reports.html).
While submitting the crash report, please use the same email address with which you are signed in on this community. This will help us find the crash report and help accordingly.
  • Does a crash happen with a specific file or multiple files? If it's happening on a specific file, then I would request you to please share the file with us. You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link here or via DM.

We are here to help. We just need more information.

Regards

Rishabh

Hi Rishabh,
Thanks for your response. I've reported every single incident (there were 4 yesterday) via the crash report window, and indicated I could be contacted through the email address I'm not logged in with.
I will take a video next time I'm working on a similar project.

As for the other questions:
Right now I'm working on Indd 17.4x64 on a Windows 10 laptop, but I've had this same thing happen since Indd 14.X. It's happened (is happening) on both Mac (Sierra, Catalina) and Windows (7, 8, 10) computers.
This happens with every file I'm working in in this manner.

The issue continues to persist without any response from Adobe.

May have an additional relevant step in the process that - I believe - may be relevant. I didn't realize it before, dawned on me only in the past days. It's such a routine I didn't think about it.

I have split layout view open, copy text from one window and paste it in the other window.
What I often do, is a regular Ctrl-V while I intend to Ctrl-Shift-V.
So I Ctrl-V, press Ctrl-Z to correct and not THEN is it when InDesign crashes, but when after that I Ctrl-Shift V.

The moment I press Ctrl-Shift V is when InDesign crashes.

This morning again 3x in a timespan of 20 minutes.

What happens when you Place the text (instead of Copying and Pasting)?

It's only short pieces of text here and there. Not an entire document.
It would be more work to remove all the text I'm not using from the placed text.
Also, I'm copy-pasting from the same document, but different page (hence the split layout view, so I don't have to scroll back and forth the whole time).

If I copy-past from an entirely different document, this doesn't happen, nor if I do scroll back and forth and copy-paste like that. Only when I have the same document open in split layout view.
