InDesign crashing when I try to change footnote options

I'm deep into a textbook layout, a revision of a previous edition, and I'd like to remove the rule above the footnotes, but ID crashes every time I attempt to either uncheck the "Rule On" box or set rule to 0. I'm guessing this is an issue with whatever version of ID this file was originally created in (quite a few years ago) not cooperating with the current version. Any ideas for fixing the issue other than creating a new document?

There may be corruption in your file. Save it as IDML and reopen as descibed below:

Clean corrupt files by exporting to .IDML or .INX
