InDesign druckt nur leere Seiten

Community Beginner ,

It's always best to export PDF and then print from Acrobat.

Ok.

Technically, InDesign is for creating PDFs, but yes, it should be able to print as well.

Ah ok.

Well. Normally, you shouldn't have any problems printing from InDesign, and PDF detour should not be required.

Evidently, you are running into a problem printing from InDesign. In such cases - which are abnormal - printing from PDF can be a solution.

It can be a bug in InDesign; you can submit it here:

https://indesign.uservoice.com/forums/601180-adobe-indesign-bugs

There's also an unlikely chance that you checked an obscure print setting in InDesign (or the printer), which causes the issue.

Hello @Inmates Shelter,

Thank you for sharing your issue with us, and I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you're experiencing with printing from InDesign. In addition to our expert's advice, would you mind helping us with a bit more information?

  1. Are you able to print other documents from InDesign that are not created recently? Is the issue specific to a particular file or happening with all the files?
  2. Have you tried printing from a different printer to see if the issue persists?
  3. Could you let us know if there are any specific settings you are using in the print dialog box within InDesign?
  4. Have you tried printing a test page from InDesign using the "Print Preview" feature to see if it displays correctly?

Your detailed input will help us in diagnosing and resolving the issue. We're here to assist you and will do our best to find a solution.

Thank you,

Abhishek Rao

Hello!

Regarding your questions:

No, I cant print at all from Indesign. I don’t have any older documents, because I just installed the app only two days ago. No matter what I’m trying to print, it doesn’t work. So, if I create any  new document (i.e. with a single line of text) InDesign also just sends a blank page to the printer. Strange, because InDesign in fact sends to blank pages to the printer even if the document contains just one page. I cant try printing from a different printer, because I only have this one.

No specific settings in the print dialog. I just have installed the app and use the standard settings. When I try to send a test-page (no matter what) it shows nothing in the print preview.

Yours,

Martin

@Inmates Shelter

Can you confirm exact model number of your printer?

And post screenshots of the settings in your print dialog.

This is very certainly a driver issue. The HP SUPD (Smart Universal Printer Driver) has not been kind to InDesign or Illustrator (which really want a PostScript printer), as the HP driver is not giving ID enough information to know what sort of data it needs (not so smart after all), so it's sending data that the driver can't process. There are many reports of this happening with all sorts of HP printers using the SUPD. Unfortunately, HP doesn't have SPECIFIC standalone drivers for the 8120e. And any of the PCL6 drivers won't recognize your printer. Also: the SUPD driver has an "auto" setting which can either accept PCL6 data or PS data, which is odd because the printer itself is PCL3, so my guess is ID is trying to send PS or PCL6, neither of which it needs.

I did some tests and found that InDesign indeed will send data for the entire document, but it wasn't accepted by the driver, so it just spits out a blank.

In the end, it will always be better to export a PDF and print from that. Your quality will be much better than the printer could do with PCL3.

I was able to reproduce the problem here, so it's not just you. I tried printing from Illustrator and InDesign CC2020 through CC2024 and they all do not like the 8120.

Can you connect your printer by USB instead of wifi/network/shared? Some reports are that the driver needs to communicate directly via a physical connection (USB) for it to pass on the printer's specific capabilities to ID/Illus.

Even if you had a PCL6 printer, as good as it is now, you will still get better output results the PDF route, especially if you had old school EPS graphics in your documents.
