InDesign File icons gone after updating to InDesign 2024

I just updated to InDesign 2024 today. I chose the option remove the2023 version but keep my Preferences etc. After installing, all .indd files were not associated with the new InDesign. So I went to "Open With" and selected the new InDesign.exe file. (It did not show up in the initial list and I had to search for it). Now the files will open automatically, but the file icon for all indd files is still the blank white box instead of showing the ID logo.

I have not had the same icon issue after updating both Illustrator and Photoshop to the new versions.

This is on a PC running Windows 10.

Hoping that you already fixed your problem. But if not, here's what I did when I encountered the same issue.

1. First uninstall old Indesign app (check first also if you have the latest/new version before you uninstall the old app)
2. Then click any Ind file that has no icon, click Properties>General>Opens With>Change
3. Select Default window will pop up and It will already chosen your latest version BUT STILL CLICK "Set default" button
4. This will make ALL your files with no icons to be updated and shows their Ind icon.

Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Patrick

A couple of weeks ago icons for InDesign and InCopy documents and templates disappeared. I've tried setting default app — no luck. Uninstalling v. 19 and installing v. 18 helps. But install v. 19 back — icons are gone again. I can change the icon by associating file type with any other program, but when I set default app to InDesign or InCopy, icons disappear.

Here's a crazy way I got my icons fixed. There's this free FileMarker utility to mark files with additional marks and color labels somewhat similar to Mac tags. I marked indd file, Explorer crashed and was crashing every time I tried to open a directory, containing indd files. I uninstalled FileMarker, rebooted — boom, .indd and .idml icons are back. I repeated this steps for .indb, .indt, .icml and .icmt files and now all of missing icons are finally back. Caution — if you have any of these files on your desktop, while marking them, Explorer will keep constantly crashing, preventing you from opening anything, you will not be able to see even the taskbar, until you somehow uninstall FileMarker, I guess it is just not compatible with Adobe apps.

I finally corrected the issue with blank InDesign icons on my Windows 10 PC - hopefully, this will work for others:

1. Right-click on any InDesign file and open Properties.

2. At the top where it says "Opens with: " - click the Change button.

3. A window will open to choose an app - click "More Apps"

4. Scroll to the bottom to "Look for another app on this PC".

5. Search in Programs for the Adobe InDesign application file and select it. Mine was located in

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign 2024

My icons changed immediately. Good luck!

Didn't work for me 😞

Seems like there should be a better fix for this by now. Uninstalling a highly-tweaked InDesign and reinstalling old; then new; is time-consuming. Wasn't a new feature supposed to be live thumbnail icons in Windows?

was the filename .indd or .INDD?

I've had the same problem but just noticed the indesign file was saved as .INDD could open and save it ok but was still a blank white icon. Tried all the things suggested like associating file then tried manually renaming the file to lowercase indd instead and it worked and the icon is back.

The same thing happened to me when I uninstalled 2023.  What I did was uninstalled 2024 and then reinstalled (2024)  it.  Everything went back to normal 🙂

Same issue here. Windows can't even see 2024 as an app. It's broken, only uninstalling, and reinstalling both versions fixed it for me. Had to use the 2023 version to restore the icons.

What's odd about this is if you do the Windows default app thing (Start-> Settings -> Apps -> Default Apps -> Choose default apps by file type) you can change it to something like Illustrator 2024 and it perfectly displays Illustrator's icon for INDD files, but then switching back to ID 2024 you get the white box thing.

Annoying.

I don't have the option to install an older version as I'm accessing Creative Cloud through work and it's controlled mostly by our Technology department. I'm not allowed to install any software to try that fix and it's kind of a dumb thing to bother them about anyway. It's not like it's the end of the world, but it's definitely one of those pet peeve-ish things.

Another profile on the computer could view the file icons correctly, so it ended up being corrupted files on my default profile. Created a fresh profile and it all seems to be working now. Thanks for all the inputs!

This update is horrible. I am having the same issues its not allowing me to save, undo etc. Its not even opening files to allow me to convert over, I hope they fix this issue ASAP, I cannot work at work due to this!

Hi @DannielleA2217 ,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. Can you confirm the version of the operating system? Do you get any error while saving the file? Have you tried resetting your preferences? If not, please try that after taking the back-up of the preferences by following the steps shared here

Thanks
