Hello
I am using indesign on my 14inch macbook pro apple m1 monterey. Each time I move an object the artboard & background workspace flashes. I have checked and both my indesign & macbook softwares are up to date.
I have noticed it seems to happen when I drag the indesign window from my main macbook screen to my seperate monitor. That seems to activate the glitch and then it flashes each time I move an object on both my macbook & monitor screen.
Hoping theres a way to fix this thanks
Try unticking GPU Performance under the GPU Performance tab in InDesign preferences.
Problem is fixed in Sonoma 14.3 released January 22.

To muddy the waters further, in addition to the MacBook 16 M1 Max, Sonoma 14.2.1, and InDesign, which flashes the screen and doe NOT recognize the GPU or the monitor, I have a Studio M1 Ultra, Sonoma 14.2, and InDesign which DOES recognize the GPU and the Apple Studio Display, and does NOT flash the screen under test conditions. Go figure.... I can't.

All that does is confirm that turning on GPU Performance is helpful in working around this bug until Apple fixes it. On the other machine, turn off the rulers in InDesign.

Switching off the rulers does not always solve the problem. You often have to switch the rulers on first and then off again. There are also plenty of occasions when the rulers are needed. GPU performance cannot be switched on or off in InDesign! And in Photoshop, display errors exist regardless of whether GPU performance is switched on or off.
And I'm really fed up with waiting for the sleepyheads in Cupertino or at Adobe. These problems have been going on for months now without any of these ignoramuses dealing with them. I have the suspicion that neither Adobe nor Apple cares. Instead, the guys around Tim Cook have just released a new update with new emoji nonsense: Emoji reactions can be added to any track in a collaborative playlist in Apple Music.
WOW, how important!

Apple released the update to macOS Sonoma 14.3 today (January 22) which beta testers claimed has now fixed the bug. Please upgrade and see if works for you. I'm upgraded to 14.3 but I'm one of the users who never suffered display issues.

Yes, I agree. Your comment on 'turning on and off rulers' fixed my flashing screen when scrolling today. So tired of Indesign having issues like this - I don't care who's fault it is, just want it sorted! Makes being a Graphic Designer a nighmare....

Did you update to macOS 14.3? It's supposed to fix the issue.

Let's see .. took at how long to fix it and I'm gonna just trust it was fixed? I had to revert back to Ventura so I could actually work efficiently, I'll wait ... You guys let me know 😉

The annoying flashing in InDesign when selecting objects, but especially when selecting text, has disappeared to the extent that the window only flashes once when the cursor is first positioned in the text. But then no more.
However, the annoying problems with Photoshop have not been eliminated.
There is a display problem there too. Images are always opened with partially transparent areas. Either a third, half or even a quarter of the image is transparent. Alternatively, the content of a previously edited image is displayed, which has long since been closed. The content is displayed correctly in the layer icon. If you zoom into the image, the content is also displayed correctly in the file window. This problem also occurred for the first time with Sonoma.

If you haven't already, the Photoshop issue should be reported in the Photoshop forum. Reporting it here will have no effect at all. This forum is only for InDesign issues. A different team develops Photoshop.

The issue still persists on Apple M1 Pro despite updating to the latest Sonomy. Enabling GPU support further causes project elements to disappear. Any work is only possible with CPU support.

Fixed huh? So the flickering I see today while moving objects in INDD at 10:32am CST. 3-21-24, must just be my imagination. It's still a problem.

Since you've given us no information to go on, there's no way to even guess.

I was simply responding to the OP. It's a frustrating thing as others have posted. I do beleive turning off the GPU option fixed it for now (and should be listed as the 'correct answer'. But thank you for responding Bob! BTW, my profile may claim I'm a beginner, but trust in the 30+ years of experience from this guy, my frustration isn't from being an amateur and not knowing how to fix things. So I do appreciate easy fixes. I just hope Adobe doesn't turn into a Pagemaker or Quark full of problems.

Well, we're not mindreaders here. And...this issue was proven to be, in most cases, caused by bugs in Sonoma that Apple finally fixed in 14.3.
So, if you had simply stated what your system specs were, we'd be in a position to help. Of course, by now, we know you only wanted to rant so I hope you feel better.

A rant would have been much more creative Bob, but thank you for the well-wishes. Have a better day Bob.

Except they haven't fixed it. It continues to be an issue under Sequoia and the latest version of InDesign.

This problem still exists for me. Mac Studio computer and monitor, ID 19.4, Sonoma 14.4.1. InDesign is unusable with this problem. Turning off the GPU preview is the only thing that fixes it, and that should not be necessary. Please fix this, Adobe.

If disabling GPU Performance fixes it then turn it off and leave it off. That feature has been wonky since it was released years ago and I strongly suspect your issue has nothing to do with the original problems with Sonoma.

Is your Sonoma updated to the latest version? Normally, this issue should be fixed since 14.3.

No. Looks like I am on 14.1 now. So that will be nice to have rulers back after I update. I've been chasing answers for this glitch off and on for months, so I was happy for a quick work-around (but a fix is better).

Sorry for the trouble using InDesign. Would you mind sharing the version of InDesign installed on your machine? I assume you're experiencing the similar issue mentioned here: https://adobe.ly/3ydd3Z0;
If so, we would need to check if the issue has resurfaced on 14.5.
If no, please share a screen recording of the flashing screen for investigation purpose. We will try our best to investigate.
Thanks,
Harshika
