InDesign Hangs When Editing or Duplicating Styles After V20 Update

Question

Hi,
Since the upgrade to V20 i'm having major issues with styles. "edit style" and "duplicate style" cause the application to hang requiring "end task" to get out. create new style seems to work ok.
 
This has only happened since the recent update, though i'm uncertain if i have used those commands since the update.
 
I have tested this on several documents in different locations and the result is the same. I'm using remote desktop with a VPN.
 
Is this a known issue? i havent seen it posted.

ok i have a fix. enabling compatability mode for Windows 8 has fixed the issue.

"I went into the Right Click > Properties for the InDesign shortcut and enabled compatibility mode for "Windows 8. I was thinking that if it worked on desktop directly but not RDP, then compatibility mode might switch something off that was causing the crash. Think the app doesn't like being used over RDP, but could be something specific to your desktop it doesn't like either, e.g. the Anti-Virus or Display Driver etc." - from out IT department.

If when you upgraded to V20 you used the option to import previous settings and preferences then it might be a good idea to reset your InDesign preferences. This process restores the program to its defaults and doing so will at least eliminate corrupt or incompatible preferences as a possible cause of the issue.

To do so on a Windows PC:

You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files in this manner is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.
