InDesign hard freezing immediately when data source added

Community Beginner ,
Sep 08, 2025 Sep 08, 2025

Got an issue today with InDesign (20.5) freezing indefinitely everytime the user adds a text file data source via Dynamic Data. Issue appears no matter what text file is used (even an empty one!). I've tried rebooting PC, resetting preferences for InDesign, updating and reinstalling InDesign, but all no effect. Issue not present on other machines either so I'm a bit lost here, any ideas would be much appreciated

Issue has been resolved. It was an issue with a plugin itself (XMPie Dynamic Content)

Happens in all documnets and not just this one?

If a document is not behaving well then try

File>Export

Choose IDML

Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.

---------

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

All documents yes. Any combinatino of documents and/or data source, it's very strange. Tried the IDML export but no luck.

Unfortunately the app doesn't reach the Crash Report popup. It stays frozen indefinitely until I am forced to kill the precess in Task Manager

Hi @ash_7833,

I'm really sorry to hear about the freezing issue you're facing. Could you please confirm which OS you are using? Also, try creating a new user account on your system and see if the issue still occurs. You can follow these guides:

For Mac: https://adobe.ly/4n0Hcis
For Windows: https://adobe.ly/4pgDJ0A

If that doesn't resolve the issue, I recommend uninstalling InDesign completely and then using the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to remove any leftover settings before reinstalling the app.

Once you've tried these steps, please let me know how it goes.

Looking forward to your update,
Abhishek

Hi @ash_7833,

Thanks for posting the update. Great to hear you identified the XMPie Dynamic Content plugin as the cause. I'd suggest checking with the plugin vendor for any updates or compatibility guidance.

Feel free to reach out if you run into any other issues.

Abhishek
