Thank you for submitting the crash report, @Catharine31061286d99e.  Have you included your email address in the description so I can try to find those reports? Is It possible for you to share the file with me over a private message so that I can take a look at my end?

As you mentioned, it was also happening with you on the last version of InDesign, i.e., 18.5.

We wanted to investigate the issue for a better understanding of the issue. It would be really helpful if you could share the screen

Hi @Catharine31061286d99e,

We are sorry to hear you're experiencing a crash while working on the table of contents in InDesign.  A few more details would be super helpful-

  • Would you mind telling us the version of InDesign and the details of your operating system?
  • Does that happen with all files or with a specific file?
  • Have you submitted the crash report?
  • Please share a screen recording showing the crash for better investigation.
  • Have you tried the same on a new file and confirm if the crash also happens on a new file?

We will try our best to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

I submitted eight crash reports. It happened with more than one file, both before and after I installed the latest update.

Hi, I've been having the same issue. My table of contents is based o more than 150 positions, as it's a list of pictures used in the publication. I've been generating the table of contents based on just one paragraph style. Indesign starts the processing, but crashes after around 3-4 seconds.
I've sent a report a few minutes ago.

Sending crash reports is pointless - for you.

You have to follow James's advice:

Hello, Every few minutes the program freezes, often it doesn't want to continue or I have to wait a few minutes for it to start working. Is there any way to make the program work properly, the previous version worked fine

It seems likely that the document has become corrupted, something ID is prone to when files are edited over a long period and in many sessions, and multiplied when working with features that require placing and managing hyperlinks, like TOCs, end notes, etc.

Try 'purging' your file by saving it to IDML, then open that file and save again as INDD under a new name. This strips bloated content (mostly generations of undo info) from the file and rewrites its structure, and often fixes annoying glitches or faults caused by corruption just bad enough to cause such gremlins.

It's also good to follow the practice of doing a Save-As under a new (iterative/archival) name at least once a day, as this strips the bloat that is often a component of these glitches.
