I want to open a new document in InDesign but nothing happens. Also documents that I made in the past won't open. Does anyone know what to do?

Reset your preferences

Delete InDesign preferences with shortcuts

You can delete the replaceable InDesign SaveData and InDesign Defaults files by holding down the following keys while InDesign is launching:

  • Windows: Shift+Ctrl+Alt
  • Mac OS: Shift+Control+Option+Command

OR if that doesn't work.

Without knowing specifics of operating system - system specs - version of InDesign etc - it's hard to advise you any further.

Hi Dolly,

Apologies for the delayed response. Would you mind sharing the version of the OS & InDesign? Do you get any error while trying to open any file? In addition to the helpful suggestions given earlier, you may follow the troubleshooting steps given on this community post(https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/resolve-slow-performance-and-unexpected-behavior-of-indesign/td-p/11487287). Hope it helps.

Regards,

Ashutosh

Which version of InDesign and OS?

Might be worth resetting your InDesign preferences first to see if that resolves the issue:

1) Close InDesign
2) Double click on Adobe InDesign's icon to launch it
3) QUICKLY hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift. (for Windows) or CTL+OPT+CMD+Shift (for Mac OS X)
4) When a dialogue appears, asking you “Delete InDesign Preference Files?” Click Yes.

(If you don't see the question do it again.)
