Dear Community, I am experiencing an issue when updating linked Photoshop files in Adobe InDesign. After modifying a PSD file in Photoshop and saving the changes, InDesign fails to update the linked image and displays an error message.. Screenshot 2025-03-02 at 10.21.29.png

Hard to know what's going on.

What OS? What version of InDesign exactly?

Few things to try - but keep in mind that lots of errors reported with InD 2025, might need a patch, so rolling back a version might be an option.

Also, there's an issue with Windows 11 update that's caused some issues, if you are on Windows 11 worth looking up what updates to uninstall.

But basic things to try first

If a document is not behaving well then try

File>Export

Choose IDML

Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.

------

Try resetting your preferences:

Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

-----

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the
Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

----

Rollback to a previous InDeisgn version

-----

For Windows 11 look at uninstalling latest updates related to InDesign issues

For Mac you may need to either upgrade or downgrade the OS - if you let us know which version of Mac you have we can better direct you. But usually updating the OS is the way forward to stop issues.

Is your INDD file and linked PSD files stored locally - or remotely - VPN, local server or a cloud service?

How are you opening the Photoshop file: from the desktop and then updating in InDesign--or right-clicking on the image in InDesign and Edit Original?

Hi @default7unxt7sx868j,

Are you still facing the issue, or was it resolved after following the expert's suggestions? As per your scenario, what I could understand is that this could be related to a corrupted PSD file, a broken link, or how InDesign processes the update.

If you're still experiencing the issue, could you try saving your InDesign file as IDML (File > Export > IDML), reopening it, and relinking the PSD? Also, test if the PSD opens fine in Photoshop, if not, it might be corrupted. Try resaving it in Photoshop before relinking it in InDesign.

Let me know how it goes! If the issue is resolved, feel free to share what worked, so others can benefit too.
