InDesign minimizing window after exiting preview mode

I've been using InDesign for four years now and have never encountered this problem. After entering and exiting presentation mode with Shift + W, the entire InDesign window resizes to about half of my screensize. I've tried searching for similar questions from others and can't find anything exact. How can I fix this?

Hi @PKMPFT,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the workaround solution. We've observed the issue happens when connected to the external monitor. Could you please confirm if you're connected to the external monitor? Is it happening on the main MacOS display as well?

We've logged a bug for the issue. However, we would suggest you upvote this UserVoice link: https://adobe.ly/3VU8Gd5 and add your voice for better tracking of votes and visibility.

Thanks,

Harshika

Try to update to the latest Monterey - macOS 12.7 - if you have to stay on that system.

Hi @stinev52656237,

We would like to follow up on your issue. Is it happening on the MacOS display only, or are you connected to an external monitor? Please also share the version of InDesign and the details of your operating system.

We will try our best to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

I have the same problem (macOS Sonoma 14.4.1, InDesign 19.4):

  1. working in InDesign
  2. window is filling my display (either by clicking the Green Dot, or double-clicking the title bar)
  3. Enter Presentation Mode (Shift+W)
  4. Exit Presentation Mode (ESC)
  5. InDesign window has resized itself and no longer fills the display
  6. Waste time resizing the window, only to have exactly the same issue next time I use Shift+W

Workaround:

  1. Open an INDD file
  2. reduce the size of InDesign window so it is not filling your display
  3. grab the top-left corner of the InDesign window and drag it to the top-left of your display
  4. grab the bottom-right corner of the InDesign window and drag it to the bottom-right of your display
  5. Do not use the Green Dot, nor double-click the title bar for this window maximisation process, you must manually drag the window corners
  6. Close the INDD file
  7. Quit InDesign
  8. Restart InDesign
  9. Load your INDD
  10. Shift+W
  11. ESC
  12. VICTORY!!

Hello,

For reference, I have a MacBook Pro, 16-inch, 2019, Intel CPU, AMD GPU.

I just tested the following:

  1.  No external monitor connected, only using the laptop's display
  2. Open an INDD file
  3. Reduce the size of InDesign window so it does not fill the screen
  4. Shift+W
  5. Esc
  6. Window restores to the reduced size as expected.
  7. Double-tap the title bar of the InDesign window so it fills the display
  8. Shift+w
  9. Esc
  10. Window restores to the reduced size, not the full size before Shift+w was pressed.
  11. Tried the Green Dot instead of double-tap. Same behaviour.
  12.  Tried my workaround described above, works fine.

In summary: I get the same behaviour with or without an external monitor connected.

FWIW—
I've been using InD for y-e-a-r-s, way before Creative Cloud (CC). Never had an issue with my custom workspace, that is before CC. I, too, have been on CC for y-e-a-r-s. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, whenever I launched InD, the workspace would always be a different size, and place itself in a different location within my desktop's screen. Interestingly, CC saves/remembers other saved preferences (panels, locations, shortcuts, etc.) but not the workspace's dimension and location. I have tried over and over ... creating a new work space .. overwriting the current one with the same name. To date, nothing has worked ... the workspace will open to whatever dimension/location it desires.
I have mentioned this in forums and reported it as well—I have not heard anything about this "bug". I have come to the conclusion that InD is CC's red-head stepchild.
