Indesign Objects "jumping" when selected

New Here ,
Feb 07, 2017 Feb 07, 2017

Hi! Need some help. I'm using Indesign CC and when I try to select any object it jumps down and to the left without me actually moving it. Anyone experience anything similar and figure out a fix? It only happens once in a while but once it starts, I can't work within the document anymore.

HELP!

Have had the same issues for weeks and this was the culprit. Great stuff. Magnet and INDD don't play that well together in my experience anyway, so I'm more than happy to fix the jitters. Kudos to OP.

THANK YOU. I set my magnet to ignore indesign - this was driving me nuts and I had no clue Magnet was the culprit!

I also use Magnet. I disabled Magnet with InDesign, but the problem persists.

Restart your Mac (unless you already did). If the problem persists, then disable Magnet entirely. Will it make a difference?

Please tell us exactly which version of the app you are running and the operating system. System specifications also help sometimes.

I'm using ID 19.0.1 on macOS Sonoma 14.1.2.

I followed the suggestion from @s26946658nu7o as I am also a Magnet user. Quitting this app seems to have been the solution for me as well. I went click-crazy in a document, and until now no unexpected nudging has occured. A big of lag still existed, but I think this was due to preflight running linked-file checks. After preflight and with Magnet quit, selecting objects performs as expected now.

I've literally got this problem today. I've emptied caches and preferences and re-installed InDesign. And items still jump when I select them. I'm also unable to change the colour of an object by selecting the colour from the swatches panel.
Any ideas?

No I don't use the Magnet app. I even searched my Macbook to check it wasn't an App installed which I didn't know about.
I'm on a MacBook running Sonoma 14.4.1 which it updated to yesterday morning, so I'm wondering if it has something to do with that?
It's seriously frustrating as I literally can't hardly do any work efficient or without frustration!

I've just managed to figure out it's linked to security software (Sophos) on my computer, as well I boot in Safe Mode both InDesign and Illustrator behave as they should

Hi! I'm having the same problem after installing the latest version of Indesign 19.3. Items just jump around when I select them. Did you figure out how to fix this? I can not figure out how to boot in 'safe mode'.

First, did you check if you're using Magnet or any kind of security software mentioned in the thread?

And here's how to boot in safe mode:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support (CA)

No, I'm in a creative department and Everybody is having the same issue, since going to the new version of Indesign. I don't think we can get them to turn off our security system. Do you think there is another way to get rid of this glitch?

I should have said, our company uses Zscaler.

Judging by other responses to this thread, and since you're not using Magnet, then most likely it's Zscaler - which is some kind of a cybersecurity tool - that causes the problem. The only way to confirm it is to disable it for a test and see if this solves the issue. If Zscaler is indeed the culprit, then it's possible there's an option to disable it for InDesign specifically. Otherwise, your IT staff needs to contact Zscaler support and request to fix the issue.

Illustrator is also behaving oddly for me too - and again works correctly in Safe Mode. Hoping for some magical fixes over the weekend.

I solved on Sonoma/Indesign_19.3: enter macOs/system pref/mouse/ disable zoomsmart

I don't know why, but this seems to have solved the problem (at least for the moment)...

Following. I'm experiencing the same issue in InDesign. I'm not running Rightzoom or Magnet. I also have issues selecting elements in Illustrator. This all happened when I switched to an M2 Mac. Running Sonoma.

I have an update on this and how it was fixed on my Macbook which I hope will help others.

I am 100% sure it was the update to Sonoma 14.4.1 that kick-started the problem on my MacBook. But it wasn't actually the update itself but how it affected another app running in the background. I troubleshooted this by:

  • I don't use Magnet so I know this wasn't the cause and I had read it could be security software, I run Sophos but disabling didn't make a diffference.
  • I started my MacBook in Safe mode (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mh21245/mac) both InDesign and Illustrator worked as they should, so it had to be something that was running in the background.
  • I disabled my login items and restarted one by one testing InDesign and Illustrator on restart. Process of elimination and I figured out it was the software for my monitor.  I now have this disabled and will do so until there is an update to fix this.

I hope this helps other people fix issues too

This worked for me as well. It was a program called Display Pilot 2 for my BenQ displays.

That solved it! Have a new BenQ Monitor and installed Display Pilot 2. Monitor connetcted through USB-C.

Every time I started Display Pilor 2 the jumps in Illustrator and Indesign happened.

Thank you for the solution!
