InDesign Page Titles

Explorer ,
Jan 08, 2023 Jan 08, 2023

Hey everyone!

I have a 200 or so page InDesign document that the printers wants submitted as individual PDFs – they also request the UPC number (barcode) be in the title of each document. I'm thinking there might be a way to format this information into the Pages in InDesign while also retaining a traditional page numbering. I would appreciate any insight you all have into this.

Thanks,

Quin

Hi @jadecricket:

You can add an object—the UPC number in this case—to the parent pages and it will appear in the same place on all body pages. Or you can anchor a graphic to the titles. It's unclear from your question what is the best approach. At any rate, it is possible and we can help if you provide additional information on your layout.

I'm questioning the first sentence though. You can export and InDesign document as spreads or as pages. But that doesn't mean individual pages. I think you're going to want to clarify this before you continue.

Barb,

The question is related to specifically the embedding a UPC number in a page title. It's a series of envelopes; my printer is requesting that each envelope design be submitted to them as a separate PDF file; easy enough – export the document and check create separate PDF files. Note where the information says "suffix" and "title." Here is where I am curious if I can use this to embed a specific set of information – that doesn't exist on the document itself. For instance, a custom title, and a UPC number (that is different for each page).

Make sense?

thanks for your prompt response!

Hi @jadecricket:

I think visually, so trying to translate your words into a picture. A screen shot or sketch makes the unusual requests clear. I'm not sure I'm there yet.

In the meantime, when we want to add content that should appear in one version of document but not another, we assign a condition tag to that content that can be hidden/shown for whichever version we need at that time.

As I continue to re-read your comments, I'm thinking you omitted the word automatically but are hoping to automate this process of adding the custom title and UPC number? If that is correct, please confirm and I'll add the scripting tag to your post to get the attention of those who may be able to help. Scripting is definitely not within my toolset. (As an aside, auto-correct always changes definitely to defiantly. In this case, I could have left it. 😊)

Have you considered embedding the info in File > File Info? Then, when you export a PDF, the information is in the File Properties metadata. When you hover a mouse pointer over the PDF file, the metadata would show.

What about:

Creating the PDF in InDesign as a whole.
Use Acrobat Pro to extract separate PDF pages.
Use Bridge to batch rename.

Not counting the time to make the original PDF, it should only take a couple of minutes.
