InDesign "Cannot open the file" error

I'm unable to open InDesign files that have been shared with me. I'm on a newer version of InDesign and my collegues can open them, but I can't and get the error message below. My MacBook is brand new and there are no missing plug-ins. Help!

Have you tried installing the previous verion of ID? Does your company use any third-party plugins that you didn't install (and may not yet be available for your verion of ID)?

If that document is via the Digital Publishing Suite, it's end of life (obsolete).

Appologies, I'm not sure what you mean by "Digital Publishing Suite"? The files are print ads that have been worked on this year. The person who created them is on long leave, so I need to access them in her absence.
