Hi,
Can anyone tell me why InDesign is Reading my files (as displayed in a status bar at the very bottom of the page/screen)? Not a big deal, but it's hanging and making life sluggish (and frankly, I've never noticed it before)...
Thanks!
Brad
Is live Preflight on? I have found that turning it off makes things run a lot faster.

Thank you all. That did the trick!
My other [totally separate] issue is I'm uploading VERY large files into my InDesign project, and it's basically taking forever to load them ("loading TIFF" window/status bar goes nowhere). One in particular is an image of a poster at 150 MB. This poster scan was originally 98 MB, but after PhotoShopping it a bit (cropping/straightening, CMYK), it became huge.
Is there any way (in either iPhoto, where my photos are stored, or PS, where some edits are made) to reduce the SIZE, but not the quality? I saved it in iPhoto as MAX quality and LARGE in size (down from my normal save of FULL) - and it reduced the imaged to 978 k. I was pretty surprised that it leapt from such a high res to such a poor res with a mere downsize from FULL to LARGE.
Happy to bring this over to the PS forum if need be.
Thanks again!
Brad

Re your poster, you image should be in RGB color mode (and convert to the appropriate PDF on InDesign. If the poster is to be viewed from a distance it doesn't need to have a high resolution.
Speak to your printer about these issues.

By uploading I assume you mean Edit>Place and you are not pasting the image?
You don't have to convert image files to CMYK before placing them. InDesign can make the same conversion when you export the final file to PDF for printing.
Also, an image initially gets placed at 100% of its print output size. Some cameras and scanners will set a large output dimension, for example a 3000 x 3000 pixel image is a fairly high res image, but its output dimensions could be set as 10"x10" at 300ppi or 30"x30" at 100ppi without resampling or changing the pixels. If your output dimension is oversized try resizing it to a smaller output dimension in Photoshop (uncheck Resample in Image Size), then scale as needed in Indesign. The scaled resolution shows as Effective Res (the output resolution) in the Links panel.

Odd, Preflight is OFF - but InDesign is still "Reading my files"...

That is great, but it never did that before and we need preflight on, so this is not a suitable answer to something that was working before.

Which version of InDesign and OS?

I agree with SJRiegel. Live Preflight is on by default in ID.
To disable it:

This worked for me. I have had huge lagging issues for my InDesign. It seems to check the links every two minutes. Had no idea this was the issue.

So I shut Preflight off, but am now still getting the Reading status bar at the bottom...

I have this issues as well, and turning pre-flight off does NOTHING to remedy the issue. I work on catalogs that have hundreds of images and this problem is TERRIBLE. I have to wait until Indesign redraws every linked image not matter what action i do in Indesign...even scrolling or trying to select an object, etc

I realize this is an old post but I was having this issue and couldn't find much help online. One article suggested going to

STEP 1: Indesign- Preferences- Display Performance, then set 'Default View' and 'Adjust View Settings' to Typical- I did this first, then the below. You will have to change in BOTH places as one change did not effect the other.
STEP 2: Go to View (in the top bar in InDesign, third from right)- Display Performance and check Typical

If the Preflight is off and displays are all on "typical" and still having the problem..... any advice?
