InDesign Text Box | When change text from white to black the last 2 words remains white?

I am having an issue with InDesign. I have a text box that had white text and I switched to black because I was removing the color background. When I switched the text to black the last couple of words on each line remains white. I have no idea why - it was perfectly fine when I last had it open.

I can move my cursor next to the last word in black and it types black text. But when I delete the white text it then changes the adjacent letter next to it to white and keeps doing this for each adjacent letter.

And even more odd if I type at the end where the word is white the additional text I type is white but for each new white letter it changes the white text on the opposite end of the string to black. I am at a loss. Anyone know why it is doing this? I did have a HP driver and Windows 11 Cumulative update yesterday and today - not sure that has anything to do with it. I did ininstall and reinstall InDesign and still have the same issue. Any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks for your time!

It looks like anGREP style is applied for the last 11 glyphs and spaces of a paragraph. Remove it.

Hi @MCB25 , Also, if the text is styled, check if the Paragraph Style has a GREP Style applied. For example this sets the last word of each paragraph to a Character Style set to white:

That behavior in InDesign usually isn’t caused by Windows updates or printer drivers — it’s almost always a formatting issue inside the text box.
From what you describe (last few words staying white, color swapping when deleting or adding characters), it sounds like there’s character-level overrides or hidden GREP/inline style logic at play.

Here’s how I’d troubleshoot and fix it step-by-step:

1. Check for Character Overrides

  • Select the problem text.

  • Open Window > Styles > Character Styles.

  • If you see [None] but it’s still white, click the Clear Overrides button (the little square with a slash in the Character Styles panel).

  • Do the same for Paragraph Styles — clear overrides there too.

Thanks,PrabuDesign smarter, faster, and bolder with InDesign scripting.

Thank you! I did this for paragraph and character styles and it worked. 🙂
