Undo steps disappear automatically while working.
Undo history resets to ~3 entries without any undo action being triggered.
This happens reproducibly every ~10 seconds.
Preflight is disabled.
Reproducible in:
- new documents
- local files (no cloud documents)
- fresh installs
- multiple machines
Windows 11.
Photoshop is not affected.

I have the same problem. Cheesumice, can I ask you, if indesign crash when you try to export PDF when creating printer spreads for printing?

Hi, I have a problem with InDesign 2026. As you can see from the screenshots, at a certain point the history is reduced or deleted without me doing anything, or it doesn't allow me to go back more than 5/6 times. I have verified that the problem is not with the file but with InDesign: the problem occurs with several files. Is there a bug in InDesign 2026? My operating system is Windows 11 Pro. Could you kindly help me?

Is InDesign fully updated to 21.0.2? Do you have enough RAM? Have you tried the identical step in InDesign 2025?

Hi, yes, the version of InDesign is up to date, and I tried with InDesign 2025, but the problem was the same. I don't think it's a RAM issue: even though my PC is limited, the data shows that it is using 65% of the memory. I am attaching a screenshot with the InDesign file open. What do you suggest?

Oops sorry, here's the correct link:
I'm not sure there are any solutions there so far, but at least you'll see that it appears to be a common problem right now (also seemingly specific to Windows).

FYI, Bob... [so you know it's not an issue on the user end]

I continue to report the undo issue. The problem has been occurring since around December 14. I use Windows 11 Pro, and I have updated InDesign to the latest version, but the problem persists. I am attaching a video to clarify what is happening on my computer. Please let me know if I can share anything else to help the Adobe team resolve this bug.

Good day,
I am currently using InDesign 21.0.2
I'm working on an HP Victus laptop (i5 12th Gen CPU, Nvidia RTX 4050, 16GB RAM)
I just noticed today that my Undo is limited to only two steps, and while observing the History panel I found out that even though it is recording every action I perform on the document, it will automatically clear itself as soon as I pause working for a second, leaving only the last two actions. I've already updated my display driver, cleared preferences, and restarted my system. After some Googling, one of the most common result is unchecking the GPU Performance in Preferences, but the option is greyed out because it does not detect a compatible GPU and Monitor which after looking further into it, is because I don't have a 2K display apparently. Although, I am not exactly sure if this matter is related to the issue.
May I ask for help resolving this problem, please? Thank you

Julius,
Just lately, others are reporting the same possible bug:
But I am not reading about a definitive answer yet.
You might try patiently working through 1 or more of the 4 ways to reset InDesign as discussed in this compendium of troubleshooting. Lately, I have sometimes reset InDesign first with method 1; then with method 3; then with method 1 again. Believe it or not, that has gotten InDesign to work ok for me just lately (but that detail is highly anecdotal to my Windows 11 machine; not my macbook pro machine).
For what it is worth, from my shortcut-oriented perspective, I don't use the History panel in favor of Cmd/Ctrl+Z to Undo, and Shift+Cmd/Ctrl+Z to redo. I only mention that as a work-around.

Mike,
Thanks so much for the response. I’ve been looking around to see if others were experiencing the same issue, mainly in hopes of finding a workaround. It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone, though a bit concerning that there isn’t a definitive fix just yet.
I’ll try out the suggested troubleshooting steps and will report back.

None of the options worked, unfortunately. I even installed a previous version of InDesign (20.2), to no avail. It seems odd that the bug carries over to a version of the software where it supposedly shouldn't exist.

Hello @Julius B.,
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. We are currently checking this with the product team. Could you also share the following information:
For macOS computers:
System Report
- You can generate it from the Apple icon > About This Mac > System Report > Save to the desktop.
For Windows computers:
System Report:
- Please press Windows Key + the letter "R" on your keyboard to bring up the Run command window
- Type "msinfo32" in the Open field and left-click OK
- While viewing the Microsoft System Information summary, go to File, then choose Save (Please do not use Export)
- Save your MSINFO32 report as "msinfo32.nfo" on your desktop to easily locate it after. It can take up to a minute to generate a report.
Kindly upload the files and a screen recording of your exact workflow leading up to the problem to Google Drive/Dropbox/etc, and share a public link here or via DM so that we can investigate this further.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Anubhav

On another PC with a different Adobe account it works, but it’s the same version of InDesign. I’ve already reinstalled InDesign and deleted the preferences, and the problem persists.

Hi guys! The same issue here...
Waiting for a new update to solve the problem.
I tried to change the number of undo steps (like Photoshop), but after exploring this solution, I discover there is not that solution in Indesign, instead I found some information that this undo steps in Indesign it is depending of RAM available which is strange.

I don't know if it's relevant or not but I'm running a Windows Insider build here with InDesign 21.0.2 and I am not having any issues with undo levels.

Anu updates on the bug? It is impossible to work, and the previous version 2024 that was reported as functional is unavailable. I had to put a lot of important projects on standby, and it is directly affecting my business.
