Indesign will not print double sided when a range is selected

I can print a whole document double sided via printer dialogue options. But when I try to reprint a certain range of pages within that document, using the same double sided options, it will only print those pages single sided.

Rather than using InDesign, try creating a PDF from the InDesign file and repeat the same process from the PDF. That will distinguish between a printer driver problem, or an InDesign problem.

yes works fine from the PDF and I can print a range of pages double sided, very much an indesign issue

What kind of printer? Is your printer driver up-to-date? It could also be a flaw in the printer driver in InDesign
