Question

Indesign won't open

I just downloaded Indesign and whenever I open the program, the icon bounces a bit (to indicate that its open) then it never does? I used the cleaner tool, re-downloaded the app, restarted my computer and still the problem persists. I also tried contacting Adobe, but all I get is "Sorry, we're closed. Please visit again"?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing. In addition to the other suggestion shared above, you may try the following steps and let us know how it goes:

  • Try running the app in Safe Mode (Mac) & Root account (Mac)?
  • Close all Adobe applications and manually reset preferences & caches by renaming the folders from the following locations as suggested earlier by @Bill Silbert
    ~/Library/Caches
    ~/Library/Preferences
  • Rename the CEP folder to CEP.old from the following location:
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe
  • If that doesn't help, rename the extensions folder to extensions.old in the following location:
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe
  • If that doesn't help either, uninstall the application using the CC Cleaner tool and reinstall from the Creative Cloud Desktop app as suggested by @Eugene Tyson & @Dave Creamer of IDEAS

We'll be looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

On the off chance it's really open and running in presentaion mode, try pressing Tab.

You can always try the creative cloud cleaner tool https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Just noticed when I click ' show all windows' I see the exact issue that's here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-opens-but-is-a-blank-grey-screen/m-p/9728903

I've gone through the steps here and did the keyboard method: https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/troubleshooting-101-replace-or-quot-trash-quot-your-indesign-preferences-2009-outdated-locked/td-p/2280649, but I'm only allowed to delete the preferences which I did try and still the same issue.

Just deleting the com.adobe.InDesign.plist file does not delete the InDesign preferences. Try doing a complete resetting of preferences as described below and see if that helps.

For Macintosh Users: The User Library folder in which InDesign’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that InDesign is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N). With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe InDesign” and the file called “com.adobe.InDesign.plist” (I know that you already deleted the .plist file but do it again just for the sake of due diligence) and delete both that folder and that file. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

For Windows Users: You can try the quick way of resetting on a PC which is to hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset. There have been some recent reports that the window asking if you want to reset is not popping up but that the prefs are being reset anyway. If this works great but if it doesn’t you may have to manually delete them.

To do so: On Windows 7 and above the preference files are hidden. To find them go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options and then click the View tab. Then select “Show hidden files and folders” or “Show hidden files, folders or drive options” in Advanced Settings. Then delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Just did that and it still isn't working. Still only shows the bar at the top that shows that the program is there, but nothing is open at all.

What ID version and OS version? (It sounds like a Mac since Windows icons usually don't bounce.)

Try signing out of, uninstalling, re-installing, and signing back into the Creative Cloud app.
