As I was working on a project, the background suddenly when black and my guides wont show even though it says they are not hidden. its almost like it is in preview mode but I can still move my images and all the options are there. can anyone tell me how to fix it?

You’re in presentation mode. Hit escape.

I don't think so... Not with rulers and panels showing.

Looks to me like you are in Preview mode (that's what the icon in the toolbox says) and you've change the background color from Gray to Black. You can edit that inthe prefs under Guids and Pasteboard. Preview mode does not disable anyu editing capabilities, it just hides the pasteboard, and all non-printing objects, including guides.

You're welcome. It was Peter who first pointed this out--I just posted the screen shot to show you where to change it.

View > Grids and Guides > Show Guides/Show Grids    (cmd + ; for Guides, cmd + ' for Grids, alt + cmd + ' for baseline grid)

And they can be set in the Preferences to be in front, or behind page elements.
