I have 89 pages in my document. I have preferences set to absolute. Under numbering and section options I have automatic checked with a 1 in start. When I generate the index it starts with 105 (see Photo). When I go back to numbering and section options it has 177 in the start page but it is not checked.

I think that absolute numbering is just for visual.

I'm not 100% sure on this one.

You say your page numbering is changing after you generate an index. Has your document ever been part of an InDesign Book collection of documents?

If the Include Book Documents option is checked when you generate an index — even when you want to run the document as a stand-alone job — InDesign will repaginate the entire book automatically in the background. And no matter what you set the pagination for before you run the index, it will be reset after you run the index and anomalies like you report can occur.

The fastest way to check if this is your problem is to uncheck the Include Book Documents box and see if that helps the situation.

Hope this helps,

Randy
