Indexing From Word List to InDesign

New Here ,
Aug 17, 2025 Aug 17, 2025

I have a Word document that is approximately 88 pages long and contains around 6,000 words. Manually indexing these words would be a daunting task for me. I am not an expert in scripting or coding, so I would prefer not to rely on a third party.

Is there a way for me to list these words in InDesign by simply copying them from Word and pasting them somewhere? I would like InDesign to search through these words and create a list. I would appreciate any help!

First question: do you want to add index markers in the InDesign document, or do you want to produce an index straight away, bypassing InDesign's index feature?

If the second, i.e. to create an independent index, you can try Indiscripts :: IndexMatic³ or https://creativepro.com/files/kahrel/indesign/index_independent.html

If you want to mark up the InDesign document with index markers, use https://creativepro.com/files/kahrel/indesign/index_from_wordlist.html

Since you're indexing bible books and chapters it may be better to add index markers so that you have more control over how the index is sorted.
