Inserting photo and caption in text box

Participant ,
Mar 17, 2019 Mar 17, 2019

I am using an HP Z book laptop and windows 7 OS. Using InDesign CC 2019

I am a beginner tackling a big project. I have figured out how to place a photo and Generate static or live captions.I selct Jump for the text Wrap option.

When I make a text box and insert the photo it seems to work well. But if I place a photo in a text box the caption is over the pre-exist ing text.

Do I always have to place a placeholder frame for photos? Do I have to make a placeholder frame for the caption as well. I have tried the tutorils but they always deal with perfect scenarios, not what goes wrong.

Please help me figure out how to move a photo from another spot and still have the caption box attached without it going over text.photo caption box.JPG

Just place the photos on the page; there no need for a frame first. And don’t place them in text frames…that turns them into inline objects that are very difficult to move around.

Thanks Bob, I did not know about inline objects.

I have a text frame on my master. Sometimes I want to use that space for

photos.

1) Can I just shorten the text frame in order to make space for the photo?

2) What about when I want the photo to appear directly below some text?

or in the midst of a column of text. ?

  1. Don't bother using Master pages. They tend be more trouble than they're worth. Yes, you can shorten (or resize) the text frame however you choose.
  2. When you want a photo or image to appear directly below some text, your best bet is to paste or place the image on the page and use the Text Anchor feature to force the image to always appear in a specific location in relation to your text. This way, if the text moves the image with move with it.

There are MANY tutorials available online that go into this feature in great detail. For starters, I recommend searching on the excellent InDesignSecrets.com for answers.

I find the master page very useful. I am making a 100 page document. At

least it will be when I get the photos all Placed. Sometimes I delete

the text box to have a photo spread. Mainly though I have the photos in

a column beside the text box. For larger images though I want them to

extend across the text box area.

So I will still use the master to keep those margins and guides the same.

Help please. The discussion has centered around how to Place the photo.

I can do that and Anchor the photo to text. It is the caption that is

the problem. All the Anchored Object Options adjust the size or

placement of the object.

I want the Jump option in Text Wrap to apply to a photo caption text

box. But as a text box that Jump is not available

You can see in the screenshot that the caption is over the text. I moved

it a bit to the side to make it obvious.

How do I get the text to jump past the caption box?

What about grouping the image frame to the caption text frame, and applying wrap to the group?

Sure. Nothing wrong with that if necessary.

This is a good method. Just be sure that the group is selected when the wrap is applied.

Another method is:

1. Make a separate text frame. It will be used as a "container" frame.

2. Add the graphic (as an inline anchored object in the new frame).

3. Add the caption text following it or use the graphics caption utility.

4. Put wrap on the outer container frame.

This particular method works well when you must maintain a tight coding structure, such as for XML, HTML, or accessibility where InDesign's "grouping" utility doesn't hold or transfer well.

When i made a group by drawing a box around it and then placed the group

in the text, I do not get a Text Wrap Option.

It seems I get a Text Wrap option for the image but not for a group. see

screen shotno text wrap option for group

Is there another way to make a group that might give me the wrap option?

That's just a selection of two objects, not a group. To make a group, select two or more objects and go to Object>Group, or use the keyboard shortcut Command G. Once the objects are grouped, you will see a the normal frame edges, but when you mouse-over or select the group, the bounding box will appear to be dashed instead of solid. Now is the time to add text wrap to the group.

Hi Migintosh ,

instead of a text wrap applied to the group I would do it on a third element, a rectangle stacked below, that is grouped with the image and the caption frame. It would be easier to change the area of the text wrap with that, I think.

FWIW: Set the text frame options to the text frame holding the caption to:

General > [ x ] Ignore Text Wrap

Even better: Do an object style with that options set and apply it to the caption frame.

You could also specify the frame insets and the applied paragraph style for the captions with the object style.

Also do another one for the rectangle with the text wrap applied.

Regards,
Uwe

Did you mean to say master-page text frames—like I used to have to do in the old days of Quark to have auto-flowing text?

Yes, exactly. I meant to say don't bother with using text frames on Master pages. Thanks for the catch!

Yes I have been using the Anchor feature. But it does not solve this new

problem of the caption appearing over the text. The text does jump past

the picture but not the caption.
