Installing color profiles

A printer is requiring me to export a PDF with the color profile "ISOnewspaper26v4" which I do not have on my machine (mac). I was able to download a version of the profile but when I double click it it opens up a dialog box but doesn't install anything. I have found very old instructions to drop the color profile in the Library section of my computer but I do not have access to those folders. Is there another way to install this or do I need to contact my computer's administrator?

There are multiple Library folders on the Mac, at different levels of the hierarchy of the system and user accounts. The two levels that come into play here are at the computer level, and at the user level. Each has its own ColorSync folder at its level.

The computer level ColorSync folder is at:

[Mac storage]/Library/ColorSync

It is likely that the Mac won’t let you put files in this folder without entering an administrator password, because in recent versions of macOS, Apple has locked down this folder. If you do have an administrator-level password for your Mac, you can copy profiles to this location.

For recent versions of macOS, Apple recommends putting new profiles into the ColorSync profile within the home folder of your own user account. That is here:

[Mac storage]/Users/[your username]/Library/ColorSync

You may not be able to see the Library folder inside your home folder because Apple hides it by default. To easily reveal it in the Mac Finder, click the Go menu and hold it down; you will not see Library right away but if you hold down the Option key, Library will appear on the Go menu. Choose that, and the Library folder window will open with the ColorSync folder inside it. You probably don’t need a password to add files to this folder.

If you always want to see the Library folder in your home folder, with your home folder open in the Finder, choose View > View Options and enable the option Show Library Folder.

How these folders differ:

  • Profiles you put into the computer-level folder show up no matter which account is using the Mac.
  • Profiles you put within your user account’s home folder appear only when the Mac is signed into your macOS account.

Library section of my computer but I do not have access to those folders

With recent versions of OSX the user>Library folder is hidden by default, so as @Conrad_C suggests you might need admin privileges to get at ‎⁨Startup⁩ ▸ ⁨Users⁩ ▸ username ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨ColorSync⁩ ▸ ⁨Profiles⁩

But you might be able to get at the root Application Support:

Startup⁩ ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Application Support⁩ ▸ ⁨Adobe⁩ ▸ ⁨Color⁩ ▸ ⁨Profiles⁩

Profiles in that folder are only available to Adobe applications, but that’s all you need for InDesign PDFs

Copy the profile into this folder and it will be available in your CC print apps’ CMYK profile lists:

StartupDrive⁩ ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Application Support⁩ ▸ ⁨Adobe⁩ ▸ ⁨Color⁩ ▸ ⁨Profiles⁩

If you move it into this folder it will show at the top of the lists:

StartupDrive ▸ ⁨Library⁩ ▸ ⁨Application Support⁩ ▸ ⁨Adobe⁩ ▸ ⁨Color⁩ ▸ ⁨Profiles⁩ ▸ ⁨Recommended⁩

If you have already created the document, make sure you assign the profile via Edit>Assign Profiles..., and check the color before exporting the PDF.

Also, if you have made CMYK image conversions in Photoshop using a different profile, make sure you reconvert using the newsprint profile, or you can place profiled RGB images and let the conversion to the newsprint CMYK profile happen when you export the PDF.
