Question

Interactive PDF opens by default in client's browser - and won't run videos.

Hi,

I've created a simple presentation using InDesign and exported as an Interactive PDF.

When I open and test this using Acrobat, the videos I've placed run perfectly fine.

However, when I send to client using PC, it seems the PDF opens by default in a browser window and the video placements are not clickable.

Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated.

Thanks,

K

Adding to Bevi's most excellent post, I will take it even further and tell you to simply scrap this project right now. It is, unfortunately, doomed to failure since those videos can't be controlled and even if they could you can't control what PDF reader is in use.

Most PDF viewers are garbage. If you tell us more about this project, we can guide you to a better way to accomplish it.

Hi Bob,

I am running into the same problem and I am desesperate for some help to make a good presentation to send over to our clients. I was planning on using interactive pdf but I read everywhere how bad the different readers are and I know I can't expect my customers to look for a good software to open our files. Any other ideas would be more than welcome !!

thank you !

Powerpoint would be a good choice.

Hi @KieranBrennanDublin,

About videos:

Browsers are not compliant PDF viewers (in other words, they don't follow the standard of how to present a PDF file), so they often have problems with videos, buttons, forms, accessibility, and other forms of interactivity.

You want to prevent end users from ever opening a PDF in a browser...any browser, any platform. One way our shop does this is to put a visible note on websites urging the user to download the PDF first, and then open it a PDF viewer like Adobe Acrobat. We also give them a link to download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader from https://get.adobe.com/reader/

About opening PDFs:

Some browsers and companies "hyjack" certain file formats and open the files in their particular software. Microsoft Edge is notorious for hijacking PDF files and opening them, even when the user's computer is set to open them in Acrobat or another program.

Make sure your client has set the default programs for file formats on their computer system.

And instruct your client to download your interactive PDF and deliberately open it in Acrobat.

Hope this helps.
