Is in design a heavier program that illustrator or photoshop?

I am new to indesign. I am so disappointed with the program. I shave been using it for 2 weeks and it is constantly crashing, it shuts down, it doesn't remember pervious commands, it does not apply new comands, it lost most of my job though I saved it. Is this frequent? It is making my studying process a nightmare. Is there anything I can do.? My laptop is a 32g ram, 512 ssd. I also formated it because of these problems, I don't think my laptop was the issue it still does the same.

Hi there,

We're so sorry to hear about this trouble. There could multiple reasons to why an application is not working as expected.  As mentioned above, we would need a few more details like:

  • Operating system and version of InDesign
  • Is the issue related to a specific document? If yes, could you please share the document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • Where are the files saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)?
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.
  • Does resetting InDesign Preferences (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/indesign/using/setting-preferences.html) help to resolve the issue?

You may also try the steps shared on this page (https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign/resolve-slow-performance-and-unexpected-behavior-of-indesign/td-p/11487287?page=1) and share your observations with us.

We’re here to help, just need more info.

Hi Eleni

Welcome to this friendly forum.

If turning off (unticking) Use Graphics Processor, found under the Performance tab in InDesign preferences doesn't solve your issue, try resetting the InDesign settings back to the factory defaults:

1) Close InDesign
2) Double click on Adobe InDesign's icon to launch it
3) QUICKLY hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift. (for Windows) or CTL+OPT+CMD+Shift (for Mac OS X)
4) When a dialog appears, ask you “Delete InDesign Preference Files?” Click Yes.

(If you don't see the question do it again.)

What version of ID? What operating system? Have you tried resetting preferences? Have you tried turning of GPU performance?
