Issue with Constrain Proportions in InDesign 2025 (20.0)

Constrain proportions for width and height in InDesign 2025 (20.0) is broken. In previous versions of InDesign the constrain-status would stay the way you selected always, now you have to link it every time you scale something, it's quite annoying and adds an extra step to workflow.

Hi everyone / G_Man,

I’m happy to share that the issue with Constrain Proportions has been fixed! The fix has been implemented in InDesign 20.1.0.36, and the team has retested it on both Windows and Mac to ensure it’s working as expected.

Please update your InDesign to the next coming version once made available publicly (20.1) via the Creative Cloud app to apply the fix.

Thank you all for your patience and feedback throughout this process. If you encounter any further issues or have questions, feel free to reach out-I’m here to help!

Best,
Abhishek Rao

Hi Abhishek,

Thank you - this seems to have finally got fixed itself with an update a few months ago now.

Hi Everyone

In the 2024 version of InDesign, the chain icon for 'Maintain proportions for width and height' was automatically activated. In InDesign 2025, it is disabled by default. Where can I adjust it so that it remains automatically activated? Can anybody help? Thx.

I beleive like most preference items you should be able to set this with no files open, close and reopen InDesign and it should be set for new files. It may or may not be set for old files when you reopen them.

Dear Abhishek,

Come on - you guys and girls have had too far long to "investigate" this issue. Make my day and tell me this is going to be sorted in 2024. You said this mater has been "prioritized". If that were the case, then this would have been dealt with by now. This is a joke that has gone on far too long.

I had to reset preference with the update, it didn't import my previous preferences, so I'm not doing that again, it's a pain.

Yes that is just SO unnecessary to have to go that route, seriously.

Hi allen_kat65,

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue with the Constrain Proportions feature in InDesign 2025. To better understand the problem, could you please share a bit more detail? A screen recording demonstrating the behavior you're seeing would be really helpful.

If possible, could you also share the packaged InDesign file so we can test it on our end? Here's a reference on how to package files in InDesign: Packaging InDesign Files.

Looking forward to your update so we can assist you further!

Best,
Abhishek

My problem is that the constrain proportions in the top bar doesn’t stay locked between one object and the next, I have to keep locking it every single time, which is very annoying.
Previously, I only had to lock it once and it stayed that way all the time.

I have exactly the same problem. No matter if an object is selected or not, the constrain proportions always reverts to Unlinked.
