Issue with origin position when moving objects

I'm having real trouble with InDesign with moving objects or text frames. When I use Select to click and drag /move anything, rather than it move from it's current location, it seems to automatically relocate and move from a position way over to the right/down???

I have tried resetting my preferences. The only way I have resolved the problem was to uninstall and reinstall the software completely... This solved the problem for about 10min but the issue has come back?!!

Any help much appreciated as I have failed to find anything about this problem online. The screenshot I have shown is where I have used Select and clicked in the centre of the square (blue outline shows where it then 'jumps' to).

The problem started with both versions I had installed of InDesign.

It's not an issue with my mouse as I have no problems with other software including Adobe Photoshop etc.

PLEASE HELP!!!   THANKS

I downgraded to 19.0, and the same thing happened.

Thankfully not Mac.

What version of Windows - did you update it recently - recent Windows 11 patch has caused issues with some other apps (not Adobe) recently.

Can you try rolling back the update on Windows if you're on the latest 24H2

Alternatively - I'd try starting Windows in Safe Mode - as a test - see if the issue persists.

If it does you know it's not a 3rd party app.

If it's working, then something is interfering with InDesign.

You can restart in normal mode.

If the issue is still there - then try quitting applications running in the background one by one to eliminate them from the issue.

So I noticed this problem this morning. indesign works perfectly when I just have it on my laptop, but when I connect my monitor it had all the problems as everyone has described. Unplugged it and it works perfectly. This is very weird.

Hi, had exactly the same problem (unable to move objects properly in InDesign) and „Run the Windows Program Compatibility troubleshooter" fixed it so far. 20.0. InD version installed.

Hi,

I literally had this problem and I went back to Version 19.5 of Indesign and I could move my objects again.

Hope this helps.

Good evening. I had the same issue, it was driving me nuts, newspaper being almost on deadline. The solution - for me - it was to uninstall TWO updates of Windows (11, 24H2). The issue it seems it was created by something in the January 2025 update and also implemented into the February 2025 one - i suspect something related to third party apps. So, my advice: roll back on those 2 updates until either Microsoft or Adobe will find a solution (if ever, fingers crossed :P). Also report the darn bug to both companies

have you followed the suggestions of Windows repair/rollback above?

Just to note - the major updates only allow a Rollback during a 10 day window, unfortunately.

If it's not working then a full restore of the computer would be necessary and reapply all the updates except for 24h2.

Not a great solution, but it's all I can think of.

For the sake of many other Windows users, can anyone identify the exact name/number of the afflicted Windows patch number and the date it became available?

As reported on this forum, there are many people saying that the latest Windows 11 patch update KB5050094 is causing this problem. Go to Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall Update and find just the update KB5050094 and uninstall it.

I have the same issue with the last version (20.1) update of InDesign. I uninstalled it and installed it again, but it is not working properly.

I am on a deadline and can't work like this. Can somebody help me, you, and everyone else having this problem?

@RosellaPapale

You would've to downgrade to the previous minor version - 20.0.1 or even 20.0

But if you are on a Mac - it's another can of worms...

Can you go back to 19.5?

@Ross_D_G, @HomeBond

Which version exactly - 19.x or 20.x?

There are more reports like yours - looks like this bug has been introducted in the recent update...

Can you downgrade a notch - to a previous minor version?

I'm using 20.1. I'm not sure which older version I was also using, 19.? but once it started, it also spread to that version too.

Thanks

Glad it's not just me going mad!!!
Hopefully someone knows how to resolve. Strangely it was occurring on both my versions of InDesign?
