Italicize one word in a variable/section

In a project I'm working on, the chapter title includes one word in italics. The rest of the book is set up to be using section markers or variables to populate its running foot. Is there a way to be able to italicize one word in that text and have it transfer to all locations?

Sounds like a good use for nested styles.

I tried that, both in nesting the style of the source and the output. It seems that InDesign discards all formatting and simply takes the letters when it's drawing from its source. Then in the output style, it seems to treat the variable as one word, not triggering the nested style there.

Hi,

You'll need a script for that!
