KDP Errors Related to Margins and Bleed for Poetry Book in Publish Online

Hi, I'm currently trying to publish a short poetry book that contains small graphics and images. I keep getting errors that KDP sends back with the margins and I attempt to fix them but don't know that much about bleed and margins. Here is the specific error message from amazon, can anyone help?

Interior
  • Your file contains insufficient bleed. See examples PDF page(s) 29.

    1. Ensure the page(s) are sized correctly for bleed. Interiors with bleed should have 0.125" (3.2 mm) added to the width and 0.25" (6.4 mm) to the page height.

    2. If the pages are already sized for bleed, make sure you extend any images and backgrounds that you want to reach all the way to the edge of the page at least 0.125” (3.2 mm) beyond the trim line. This prevents white gaps along the outside edge(s) when the file is trimmed to size.

    3. If there is content that is not intended to bleed, please ensure it stops within the margins, 0.375" (9.5 mm) or more from any outside edge of the page.

Watch our video, which explains trim size, margins, and bleed.
  • Increase your inside margins so that content isn't obscured when the book is bound. See examples on PDF page(s) 5 - 7, 14 - 16, 29 - 31.

First off, the mod renaming here is wonky; KDP has nothing to do with Adobe Publish Online.

Layout for KDP print is simple —

  • Your InDesign pages should be the trim size — 6x9, 8-1/2x11, whatever you've selected for the book size.
  • If you have no elements extending off the pages (graphics, lines, photos, etc.), you don't need bleed and should specify "no bleed" in the book setup.
  • If you do have elements that go to page edge, you must set up a 1/8 inch bleed on all sides of your pages, in Document Setup.
  • Bleed items must go EXACTLY TO the bleed line in Normal display. Not short of, and not extending past. (Clipping them to the bleed line is usually taken care of by the PDF export, so the thing to watch is items that don't reach the bleed line, which KDP will erratically interpret as various faults.)
  • There must be NO text or other "live element" outside the page margins, which should be at least 3/8 inch (0.375) on all sides, and ideally should be a bit wider — use 1 inch on the inside, a half inch on the outside, and a half inch to three-quarters inch top and bottom. Any text that even touches what they regard as the "live element" margin of about 0.375 will trigger cryptic warnings about insufficient bleed and other faults.
  • Yes, use a full inch on the inside margin.

Check your layout against these guidelines. Happy to answer further questions.

And when you get to the cover, you should go to the spine-width calculation page, enter your book data, and then download the cover template. Place it as a layer in your cover InDesign file and you'll have all the margins, bleed, live area, ISBN placement etc. pre-marked for you.
