Line break in paragraph styles

Hi,

I'm importing XML to InDesign and using character/table/paragraph styles to format mapped to the XML tags. Is there any way to insert a line break/carriage return/soft return into a paragraph style? I.e. for every instance of the XML tag there will be a line break inserted?

I'm familiar with the reasons to not use forced line breaks, I'm just hoping to learn about the above problem. Thanks!

Paragraph styles can only format content that already is in the text frame. They can't add content like a return, forced line break within a paragraph (aka, a Shift + Return), or any glyphs (alpha numerics, punctuation, symbols, etc.)

Only 3 ways I know of that can add content:

  1. Use InDesign's Find/Edit utility to search for some known character and insert the return or line break within the paragraph.
  2. Have the hard paragraph return or line break within a paragraph inserted at the time your XML file is created and before it's brought into InDesign.
  3. Run a transform script on the XML file to find ABC and add in the return.
