Mac OS Finder Tags

Explorer ,
Nov 28, 2023 Nov 28, 2023

I use Finder Tags to organize my project folders and locate files easily from the finder. Tags work well for Illustrator, but not at all for Indesign—nothing shows up for Indesign (see screenshot). I am wondering if it's a me thing, or if for some reason there just isn't support for tags in InDesign.

You can't get an answer for question like that in the user forums.

You should report bugs to the InDesign User Voice website:

I'm seeing Finder tags in InDesign. I'm using macOS Ventura 13.6.2 and InDesign 2024:

Thanks Steve, that's helpful. You're using the same versions as me, so it's a me thing somehow.

I can also confirm that it works under same setup:

I don't remember it working for me in earlier versions of Indesign/Mac OS either, so it's a persistent thing that will probably only be wiped out by digging down and deleting stuff in the Application Support folders, etc. Thanks for confirming that it is my setup.

I also see .INDD files appear when I click a Finder tag in the sidebar, but one thing occurred to me: Are the InDesign documents stored on the Mac itself, or on some kind of external storage, such as USB drives or mounted network volumes?

The reason I ask is that I seem to remember something about Finder tags working only on volumes formatted using Apple file systems (HFS+ or APFS). But I'm not sure how true that is.

No external drives. But I did a bit more digging and noticed that Indesign does display files that have default tags (i.e. Red, Blue, Green, etc.) It's the custom ones that I've created (Current Projects, Assets, etc.) that don't appear. So a bug then??

I'm realizing that the issue is not with individual files, but with FOLDERS. The Open and Place commands do show files that are tagged, but not folders. Other apps, like Illustrator, recognize folders. I'm not the type to tag every single file. Files live within folders that are tagged so that I can find them easily. Above Steve seems to indicate that he can see folders that are tagged in InDesign.

Yes, as indicated in my screen capture, I have no problem with seeing tags in folders.

Ok if you're only talking about folders, then I can confirm:

Tagged folders will NOT show up when selecting the respective tag in the sidebar in the Open dialog in InDesign. The tagged folders will show up in other apps (Illustrator etc.)

Does look like a specifically InDesign bug.

InDesign's Open dialog - no tagged folders, only files:

Thanks for confirming this. Perhaps I was not clear enough before, but you've said it perfectly. I have noticed this in previous incarnations of InDesign and Mac OS, so I believe it's an ongoing issue. Can someone at Adobe please address this annoying bug?

note: the bug is only in 'tagged folders' & in 'place' command (cmd+D), you can still see other tagged *files*, or the tagged folders when they are in their original source

Place (cmd+D) can't see tagged folders on mac

By @Mendi M

Good to see this bug is now being reported.

However, may I suggest to edit the bug title for clarity because right now it sounds misleading. It implies that you don't see tagged folders in the Place dialog under any circumstances, which is not true. Obviously, we do see tagged folders UNLESS we specifically search by tag.

A more accurate description would look like this:

Place (Cmd+D) can't see tagged folders on Mac when searching by tag
