Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra and InDesign CS6 - LOCKED

Has anyone else experienced difficulties with the panels in InDesign CS6 not opening and changing when required? The only thing I haven't tried yet is full deletion and re-installation. I'd rather not go through that process. It is slowing my work down. No such problem with Photoshop CS6 or Illustrator CS6.

CS6 is not even supported with El Capitan. Don't expect that it will work with Sierra.

Downgrade your computer to 10.10 or upgrade to a CC subscription. CS6 and Sierra is unsupported. It might work, but if not, you are alone.

What’s the difference? It’s not supported so it might work and it might not.

Even it works for someone else, it might not work for you. If you need to know that badly, go ahead and take your chances by installing it.

Willi's answer is correct for most people trying to use CS6 on Yosemite or Sierra. We see reports of it not working every day.

Your software is end-of-life and will never be upgraded. If you can get it to work, you are very lucky, that's all.

Willi's answer is not the solution to the poster's problem, so it is NOT correct.

He is correct about CS6 not being officially supported under Sierra, but that is not what was being asked.

I can understand why some people think that running CS6 for business is a risk, but if you're prepared to take that supposed 'risk' then being told that the solution to every problem is to change your OS or software is not useful or helpful at all.

The risk is largely an imaginary one anyway and there's no way it could be described as a big risk. You're far more likely to have a major problem with CC2017 when they introduce a new feature than with established software like CS6. I can speak from personal experience that, apart from these forums, you're just as much on your own if you have problems with CC Indesign.

Steve, have a read of the forums some time and you will find that there are a huge number of people experiencing problems with Indesign CC2017. Running CS6 is quite feasible on Sierra if you're prepared to do a bit of troubleshooting and testing. Unlike CC2017, no new bugs are being introduced so it is much easier to troubleshoot. There are no showstopper bugs in Indesign CC at the moment, but there are plenty of annoying ones!

I've mentioned a couple of times that the fontd process/issues is closely related to duplicate fonts. Sort out your fonts and you will likely find that CS6 runs beautifully in Sierra. I use both every day and CS6 certainly gives me a lot less grief than CC2017 does.

So you could legitimately say, if you are using Indesign CC be prepared - anything else could break at any time.

If a software is not supported on a specific OS you cannot expect that it runs. If it does under certain circumstances you might be happy, but this is not the case for all users.

Any new version has new problems. Not every problem is a bug, it is often an incmpatiblity with other not updated components or 3rd party plugins. If in CC 2017 a bug i found you can expect a fix soon, which cannot happen with CS6. There you are alone.

CS6 is not established, it is dead as it has reached EOL, End of Life.

It is a huge risk to recommend CS6 for others. Sorry.

I'm sorry Willi but you are wrong and you are still missing the point. The point is not that CS6 is not supported any longer - we all know and accept that. This is not what we are discussing. There is also NO quantifiable risk in using CS6.

If we are to believe you that there is a 'huge risk' running CS6 then you must run the same 'huge risk' running CC2017. I wish people would either stop spouting this rubbish, or qualify it by explaining what this imaginary 'risk' is. The risk seems to exist solely in the minds of a few people on this forum.

CS6 has only reached 'end of life' for Adobe's commercial purposes - that isn't a problem. It is still very obviously a viable software option for many of us though. We continue to use it as we always have because it works like it always has. It won't work forever, but then neither will CC2017 - there is no difference.

Anyone who has used Adobe software for any length of time will also smile at your suggestion that bugs in the latest version can be expected to be fixed soon. Indesign CC2015 still had bugs when it was replaced by CC2017, so when can we expect the bugs in Indesign CC2015 to be fixed? I think you will find that the answer is 'they won't be fixed' even though it is not an EOL product.

And to reiterate - I use both CS6 and CC versions of Indesign every day and I have far less issues with CS6 than I do with CC.

I have given a solution to the original question in this thread which is obviously working for people, so I was just suggesting that this helpful solution should replace the unrelated information that is currently marked as 'correct'.

At last someone speaking sense! CS6 works fine with current OS software, lots of unnecessary scare mongering!  People can still run small businesses, freelancers can still work using CS6. Yes there some problems with upgrades which fall on Apples shoulders but if you look find people (like flaming1) who give factual answers not 'opinions' then those problems are often sorted out.  I use CS6 and run a successful small business. I dare say I will upgrade to the CC at somepoint but am reluctant to have my hand forced especially when no real benefit. Once again anyone having 'wheel of doom' issues with either CS6 or CC with Sierra upgrade please try flaming1's solution.

Can you help me with InDesign CS6 on osSierra (MacBookPro 2015)? All of the other CS 6 apps seem to be working fine but InDesign application font interface and all fonts are bitmapping...any advice how to fix?

Let's say this again as Bob and Willi still seem to want to muddy the waters for some reason.

CS6 was never optimised for retina displays but it has absolutely no problems running on an iMac's retina display and is clear and crisp.

CS6 is not supported but it can and does run smoothly, quickly and very well with El Capitan and Sierra.

If you can get CS6 to run on El Capitan and Sierra, then you're a very lucky person! It doesn't work that way for most people.

Thank you flaming1 for a fix (temporary or not) for this problem. I've been experiencing slow panels in InDesign CS6 for a while now, and it is the very definition of frustrating.

It's unfortunate that the solution to the problem is being shouted over by people yelling "there will never be a solution to this problem."

FACT: CS6 is not supported! FULL STOP.

If you want to dispute that, go right ahead. But the fact that it works for you doesn't mean it will work for others. It seems the only time you show up here is to dispute it and talk about CS6 will live forever. Well, good for you! But until you actually hang around here and provide real help EVERY DAY, stick to facts and not false accusations.

One day, CS6 will crash hard on you, and then what will you have to say?
