MAJOR- 2018 InDesign and InCopy Error Code 14

Hello there good crew of Adobe!

I work at a magazine publisher and our team just updated to the latest 2018 Adobe CC releases, the new illustrator tools are wonderful by the way.

However we have hit a major snag. In the latest 2018 release of inDesign and inCopy someone currently has an inDesign document open, and someone tries to access the same document via inCopy document, they are given the Error Code 14 (Which claims the document is open elsewhere preventing access). Oddly enough though, if the team member opens the document with inCopy first then the other member can access the document with inDesign without the Error 14.

This is a new issue that was never present before until the 2018 release.

This is a major problem for us as we have a team of designers and editors constantly working on the same collection of inDesign files, and we have a major print date to hit.

I love your products and have been a member for years but I need help!

    November 2017 (13.0.1) release of InDesign CC has just become available via the Creative Cloud Desktop application.

    Please update InDesign and see if the issue is resolved.

    This may help. It has worked for our small group.

    On the file server itself, launch Finder. This must be done in a User who has Admin permissions for the file server computer and its volumes.

    Click on the Volume itself to highlight and Click File>Get Info.

    At the bottom of the Get Info Window for the Volume, Sharing and Permissions. There may be one or two users who have "Read and Write" while others have Read Only and other users have No permissions and are not listed.

    A quick fix may be to choose Ignore Ownership on this Volume. You may then have to populate that to the lower level folders.

    You may also highlight a folder, click the File>Get Info and then Choose Everyone>Read and Write or Staff>Read and Write under the Sharing Permissions. Populate those permissions to the "Enclosed Folders." You can also under the Sharing and Permissions choose the individual usernames and assign Read and Write permissions to those Users according to Volumes, Folders, Files, etc.

    FYI, the upgrade to Mac OS 10.13.2 High Sierra has sucked the life out of me.

    I also don't like the upgrades to Creative Cloud.

    I think that the end users are now the Beta testers for all software developers.

    It's a permissions thing. "Command i" on the file you cannot open, and switch everything to read and write Staff and Everyone and then... it works! Well, it did... then stopped. So, duplicating the offending file then works. Crazy this isn't sorted. For an "industry standard" this is embarrassing.

    Exporting as an .idml file at least allows you to open it and avoid the error 14 though it's less than ideal.

    This and the transparency issue with pdf files from illustrator, and the fact that when I try to do a search to place any file within a CC suite app, is now bricked. it doesn't work, I'm fed up with CC - even with an effective monopoly, products should be both stable builds and reliable to use. Peoples livelihoods and reputations depend on your software Adobe, please don't become the design equivalent of Microsoft Office on Mac. OSX 10.13.1 Indesign 13.01.

    Before update: error 14.

    After update

    InDesign file is closed by user1 but file can't open by any other user until other user1 logs off the server or quits InDesign.

    We are in the same position. The update stopped error 14, but the last user to open a file has to disconnect from the shared server before another user can open it. Permissions repairs do not fix this.

    We have a site license for 2 computer for the Adobe Creative Suite and we have upgraded both computers to High Sierra 10.13.1 and to InDesign 13.0.1. When one team member creates, or edits, an InDesign doc on their computer other team members cannot open the doc on the other computer (it creates an Error 14 message).

    As you can image this is a huge issue since we produce a bi-monthly print publication.

    I wish I had seen this thread before I had decided to upgrade our team to High Sierra.

    Any update on this issue? Users all running latest version of Mac OS 10.12.6 and fully updated version of Adobe Indesign (13.0.1) and InCopy (13.0.1). Users receive "Cannot open "Filename". The file "Filename" is incompatible with Adobe InCopy Error Code 14" when another user has it open

    We are running CC 2015.4

    11.4.0.90 Build

    We cannot go up to later versions yet due to other software compatibilities

    What does this have to do with error 14 issues on CC2018?

    If you have a question, start a new thread and be prepared to find out that whatever it is, won't be fixed.

    Hello folks

    Error 14 is a problem for our design organisation too. And like like others we too are doing the usual workarounds of saving to desktop etc. In actual fact if you just rename the file in Finder (say add a random character on the end) it will open?

    Anyway, one finger of suspicion for us has pointed toward shared CC libraries, but it is inconclusive and I thought if I escalate this to the wider community, people may or may not agree?

    The theory is if you retain a CC library from a previous iteration of the software it may be the problem? The only way to find out if this is it is to completely build your library again – not at all ideal.

    What do people think?

    I am encountering this same issue too.

    I have two iMac's both running the latest OS and both with the latest version of InDesign CC.

    Generally files are shared over a Local Network and i have found that sometimes files which have been saved on the secondary machine do not open on the Primary machine with the 'error code: 14.'

    Renaming/Duplicating with a new name, allows me to open the file on the primary machine, but saving the file after that can sometimes be an issue.

    Hi Ravi, that update hasn't fixed the problem unfortunately. Still has the same 'Error Code 14' window pop up.

    Which OS?

    If you are on Mac 10.12, then with the update to 13.0.1 version of InDesign, Error Code 14 should no longer be there.

    If you are on Mac 10.13, then with the update to 13.0.1 version of InDesign, the problem (Error Code 14) should no longer happen but you would see another problem - "the file is already open by another user". This problem has been reported to Apple and we are awaiting a fix.

    Thanks for posting this question! We're having the same trouble after upgrading to the 2018 version of both InDesign and InCopy. Our copy editors cannot work simultaneously in InCopy if the designers have the InDesign file open and are getting the Error -14 prompt. In addition to absolute madness coming from both teams, we've lost hours of work because of this programming flaw. NOTE TO ADOBE: Most of us still prefer to own and maintain our own file servers, so please include support for a file server in your testing before releasing further upgrades. We've actually had a conversation with your CEO about this last year (2016). After reading a few more responses in this thread, we have downgraded to InDesign 2017 in an effort to thwart this. All files reside on a Mac server and our OS is El Capitan, so, for us at least, this is not related to High Sierra's undesirable interactions with InDesign 2018. We will let you know if the 2017 downgrade is effective.
