Major concerns about subscription: can I still use CS6 without a sub; will all my files be destroyed if I don't pay for a sub? and more

Hello.

I have CS6 and have used it for years. I purposely did NOT order, download or install InDesign CC.

When I opened InDesign CS6 yesterday, a message advising the need to purchase a subscription appeared. The message was rather alarming and gave rise to several questions. Here are a few for starters:

1. If I do not purchase a subscription, can I still use CS6?

2. If I do not purchase a subscription, will all my InDesign files including pdf files be inaccessible and/or destroyed? (The subscription message indicated that without a sub, all my files including pdf files be inaccessible or destroyed after a "Trial Period").

3. Is there a way to stop the countdown to the need to purchase a subscription? It seems there's a clock ticking somewhere and that terrible things will happen if I don't pay by the deadline. I did not click on anything to start the clock ticking.

4. Can users expect Adobe to hold its customers to ransom for all its other products?

Thanks.

No. We have been using it nearly everyday to update a book. It has worked fine. Thanks.

Something happened to your install, this has nothing to do with CC. Have you tried reentering your CS6 serial number?

Did you reinstall CS6 recently? Perhaps you are seeing the trial dialog. I have CS6 running on a machine with no subscription and it works fine.

This is very concerning. My understanding is that you can use CS6 forever as long as it is still compatible with your operating system. It may be that Adobe has gone too far in their zeal to promote subscriptions. Please post a screen capture of the message you are seeing.

Could it be some kind of malware? I'd run some thorough tests on that machine...

Definitely there are schemes when user is blackmailed to pay money to some fake account, otherwise blah blah blah...

Never heard about any 'Adobe addicted' but there's always the first time.

Years ago, my friend had a bit experience with a virus destroying specifically MS Office user created files (doc, xls, ppt). Not simply deleting, destroying. Which is even worse.

So, in OP's shoes, I would better do a backup of my precious files to some external media. Not blaming on Adobe (so far ). FWIW.

1. Yes

2. That is ridiculous. Your files belong to you.

3. Can you post a screenshot of what you’re seeing?

4. Again, totally ridiculous. Nobody’s holding anything for ransom.

Bob, on 2. OP got it wrong on PDFs (*) but what use are InDesign files without access to InDesign? You personally, I'm sure, may have some old Quark XPress and Aldus PageMaker files stowed away. Do you pay a fee if you start up that ole software one more time to rescue some text out of it?

(*) I dearly, dearly hope so. In addition, I hope OP didn't give Adobe any good ideas here.

Fact: The files are yours.

The OP could always re-up for one month any time in the future or hire someone else to work on the files. Nobody’s taking them away.

As for old PM or QXP files, yeah, I’m sure, but I don’t have a machine old enough to run software that old.
