Is there a simpler way to make timelines in Indesign other than actually measuring the distance in between points on the timeline to make sure the dates are spaced apart correctly? I can't find any free software for macs that can do what I am trying to do.

Would a multi-column table work for you? Each column width could represent one time unit (hour, day, week, month, etc.)  InDesign table and cell styles offer lots of options.

Depending on the way you are working with the elements, Edit > Step Repeat

    feature of InDesign would help.

Depending on how you're setting this up, setting tab stops might be the simplest solution. You could add a paragraph rule for the line itself if that was appropriate, too.

Oh a timeline... I'm so thick sometimes

Well there's a few ways to do it - if you post up pics of what you have in mind we may be able to brainstorm a few different techniques.

Set it to colour none and 0pt too, should help

I attached the kind of timeline I was trying to make. (I don't have the one I actually made on my computer.) I ended up doing it manually by using lines that were scaled to different percentages to get the spacing I wanted. Using tables is probably easier, as suggested on one post. The problem with step and repeat or distributing objects is that I don't want spacing to be even since my dates aren't evenly spaced. Thanks for all the help!

I would suggest you to make your timeline in scale... like one year is one inch etc.. and use indesigns powerfull numeral positioning tools for positioning points...

Distribution panel could be also handy, with it you can postition objects with exact gap...

Normally when people talk about "timelines" they are referring to animation timelines - can you clarify what you're requesting to know?

Some screen shots or a sample of what you're trying to do would be helpful
