many fonts used in InDesign documents; need to replace them with google fonts. Easy way?

Hi there,

I've got many many text entries in numerous InDesign documents, big variety of fonts, and because all of this needs to be prepared for a WordPress website, I'm told that I have to replace these fonts with google fonts.  I've found some nice google fonts.

But if I have to select each font in InDesign one bit at a time (these bits are all over the place—one font for titles, another font for main text, another font for something else... and all of this repeated hundreds and hundreds of time), I'll be looking at days/weeks and maybe carpal tunnel.

Is there a way in InDesign to select a font and tell InDesign to change everything in the document in that font, to another font (a google font)?

If there were a way to do this in Word, I'd do that, but my googling didn't produce an answer on that one.

If you used character and paragraph styles, it would be very easy. If you didn't use styles, it would be exactly as you describe!

What does one have to do with the other?

Copy/paste the text from InDesign to WordPress and then format it there.

I will try that tomorrow... and hope that if InDesign can find the font, it will then allow me to replace everything in that font with another (google-qualified) font.

Steve, I'm afraid to say that I didn't use Character and Paragraph Styles (to my knowledge).

And Bob, if WordPress allows me an easy way to select all the text in a certain font and then change it all to a google-and-WordPress qualified font, that would be great. 

I'll try to learn about this tomorrow.

My suggestion will allow you to replace one font with another, but since I'm unfamiliar with WordPress and I don't know what you mean by "Google Fonts," it may be different for you. If the fonts are on your computer and available to use in other programs, it's likely that you can select a font that's in your InDesign document and replace it with another font. It works on a rather broad scale, but that sounds like what you are after. If you had paragraph styles and character styles, you would have much more control over changes to your type, because editing a style will change any text that the style has been applied to in one go.

Any decent theme will allow you to use Google fonts. You set various parameters in the theme settings and you can supplement that with custom CSS.

While the find/change advice you've been given here for InDesign is good, it's also meaningless for what you're trying to accomplish.

Thanks everyone for your good InDesign advice.  I think Bob's answer sums it up for me, though—nothing I do in InDesign will help me when it comes to setting up my site in WordPress, where I'll just have to fix the fonts anyway.

I do appreciate all the posts—it's very helpful to me to know what's coming up (even if it's going to be a lot of work, accompanied by a case of carpal tunnel in my right wrist!).

It’s not that hard if you export a properly tagged HTML file from InDesign and paste into the text editor portion in WordPress.

Use Find/Change. You can set the scope of the Find /Change command to all open documents (but no closed ones). Click More Options if necessary then click on the Find Format panel and select the font to replace. Click on the Change Format panel and select the font you want to use. Click Change All.

It can miss some uses of fonts. If you are using custom styles for numbers or bullets those will be missed because the text (the bullets or numbers) is formatting, not content. You can’t select those characters, you have to edit the formatting that adds them.

This will change all fonts, but it won’t redefine styles. If you have been diligent about using styles I suggest you make the change there. It won’t be global, meaning you will have to repeat the change for each document, and for each style in the document. But it will be better.
