Question

Master Pages Do I Link Them?

I'm learning ID CC 2020 right now and creating a 256 page book. I created a text box on each

facing page on A Master which is smaller than the margins. Should I link them? If so, what is the best way to do that?

Thanks for any help.

Yes, Deborah. You can still have linked master pages.

Thanks, Barb, that's great. Do I need to check anything in the Smart Text Reflow Preference Box? Do I need Smart Text Reflow? Thank you!

Hi Deborah:

My suggestion is that when you create this new document, you enable the checkbox for Use Primary Frames. This will draw two threaded text frames on the A-Master. Normally, text frames match the margin positions—that's what margin guides are for—but you can adjust the two frames if necessary on the A-Master. Then return to body page 1 and place the text.

The advantage of using primary frames is that you can tweak their size and position later on the master page, and the body pages will adapt accordingly. See https://indesignsecrets.com/indesign-basics-primary-text-frames.php for more details.

Thank you, Barb. I'll look into primary frames. Will that allow me to add a master page B and have it work into that text flow so that the page numbers will be in sequence as well and the threaded text boxes? B Master Page, for example, will be the Chapter Opening design. Thanks again.
