Measurements, rulers, dimensions and scale in InDesign CC 2019.

Hello all,

I have a question about InDesign and the way it works with measurements and scales.

I am presently working on a project and need to be able to set measurements on a main object. Let me be more specific. In InDesign I usually set my canvas size and place objects on it. The canvas can be a letter size sheet in which case the size is 8.5 by 11 inches. Objects I place on this canvas can be placed in real size, they can be enlarged or they can be reduced. This project requires me to do this a little differently.

Question:

Can an object be placed on a canvas in InDesign CC 2019 without any concern for size, be selected and then have its real size entered so InDesign learns its real size and adjusts the canvas (and rulers) accordingly? For instance, I place an object on a letter size canvas or sheet (8.5 inches wide) taking almost the entire width of the sheet (let's say it takes 7 inches in width). I know the object is 4 inches wide although it appears to be 7 inches on the screen because of the space it takes on the sheet. Is there a way to tell InDesign CC 2019 that the object is 4 inches wide to that it adjusts itself accordingly? In this case will the rulers be also adjusted?

Thank you in advance.

Set your Zoom view to 100% and your 4" object will measure 4" on screen.

With InDesign CS6 and later the Zoom percentage view changed. The 100% zoom level now represents the actual print output size of an object or page. At the 100% view InDesign gets your monitor resolution from the system, and displays your page and the rulers at their actual print dimensions on screen.

InDesign's zoom view is different than Photoshop's, where 100% represents a 1:1 relationship between a monitor and image pixel. At a 100% view the rulers don't necessarily represent print output dimensions—you have to choose View >Print Size in order to get an actual print view.

In InDesign speak the document size is the Page Size and it sits on the Paste Board.

You can use Object Styles repeat features of an image.

Hi, Derek.

Thank you for your reply and help.

I understand the points you shared. I guess my point or question is that I wish to place an object or draw one without any concern as to whether its in actual size or not. After the object is placed or drawn I would then like to find a way to tell InDesign it's size so that it can resize it on the page or resize the page os it is in proper scale with the drawing's size. The rulers also need to be adjusted accordingly.

I have used a similar feature in Photoshop. You can tell Photoshop the size of an object and from that point forward you are able to take accurate measurements between any two points on your image.

Any idea as to how/if this can be done in InDesign CC 2019?

Thank you again.

Select the object and enter the desired size(s) in the Transform panel's W and/or H fields and tap the Enter key.

Type Ctrl/Cmd+Alt+Shift+E.
